Mozzie patches coming soon?

Sat 27 Jul, 2013 8:08 pm

Interesting new product in testing - potentially very good news for malaria-stricken regions and for hikers too.

Sorry but we already have patches available here in Aus.
I bought some well over a year ago for my cycling trip from Mudgee NSW to Perth WA.
I forget the brand but I'm pretty sure I picked them up at an IGA. They worked great and were much easier on my gear than the equally efficient deet product Bushmans.
The Bushmans worked great but is detrimental to plastics and nylons if memory serves.
I'll keep an eye out for the packaging as I've got to do some kit maintenance shortly like seam sealing one of my tents and its likely I've a patch or two left in one of my packs where my tent is stored.

If you're worried about the effects of DEET on plastic, you can use picaridin. Very similar efficacy but nicer to your plastic and nylon.

I hate Deet. I've opted to just wear more clothing. I guess these would have the deet effect without having to wipe down your whole body and feeling 'icky' at the end of a days walk?

Hey Icefest,
thanks for the tip.

I've not heard of picaridin before.
I'll look into it for sure.

I've camped in places where the damn mozzies laugh at aeroguard and the Bushmans deet was the only alternative I was aware of.

I grabbed some of the aforementioned patches in an attempt to keep the deet from attacking my gear (in particular I was concerned about my sleeping bag and bivybag).

The results were on the positive side and from a poor memory they had a citrisy odour about them.

Glad you and Andrewbish are on the ball and making us aware of products both old and new that work.

Welp, up real early again..

Been using this non toxic US army 3M stuff, no smell and 100% no mossies!

Takes about 6 machine washes to remove it, lasts a couple of months unwashed!

I was cleaning out my panniers on my touring bike today and came across one of the patches I was waffling about earlier in this thread.
They are citronella based according to the label.
I followed the link on the patch which took me to http://www.mozzigear.com.au/mosquito-patches.html
The prices appear to have skyrocketed as they are $10 for a box of 10.
No way would I have paid that for my purchase which I imagine would have been approx half that at the time (i"m tight).

I was out bush and took the lid of my roll on aeroguard. A mozzie landed on the ball thing, sat there for a minute looking at me then left. Seriously WT *$&#.

:? :(

Well I hate to say it but 3M don't make it any more but you can still get it to Australia from remaining stock imported from the US:

or

It is expensive but it works.

Just reading the ULTRATHON label it says..... permethrin 0.50% other ingredients 99.50 %.....wonder what the other ingredients are ?....

most likely 99.5% water.

The Equip brand permethrin seems to be working for me, not sure on the longevity yet, but over the next couple weeks as the bugs come up, I'll know if its still effective. But its expensive for how much you get, I think I'll try to find some veterinary stuff, hopefully there is a fully water based one available here. (gotta love MSDS info!)
