Kiwis originated from Aus

Wed 18 Dec, 2013 4:07 am

The kiwi can now be put alongside Phar Lap, Crowded House and Pavlova as Kiwiana classics Australians try to claim as their own.

You left out Russel Crowe there wayno
But since ~1/9 of NZ population lives over here, we might as well start claiming your wildlife too!

(but note Crowded House was formed and generally based in Melbourne, by one Kiwi (Neil Finn) and two Aussies (Paul Hester and Nick Seymour)...so it was pretty much a cross-Tasman membership Australian based band  (and according to wikipedia apparently there have been American members too)

You can have Russell Crowe - we don't want him!

There is a theory that almost the entire NZ flora is originally Australian but since speciated. The ice ages basically wipe NZ clean and most of the current biota has blown in from Australia.

Arguing over who thought of the pavlova first is a bit... ridiculous. It would be like the Canadian and Americans bickering over who thought of the poutine first... Not that pavlova is such a bad dessert, but it kinda reflects on the fact that Kiwis and Aussies only have this cake to clame as their own... How about coming up with new better recipes instead ? The US, with only a couple hundred years of history, already have a regional cuisine (the Pacific NW, cajun and creole cooking, Southern cooking, Tex-Mex, Italian-American, etc...), just like on the old continent, why can't NZ and Australia do as well ?

NZ has many food icons: pavlova, hangi, kiwifruit, feijoa, lolly cake, kina, kiwi dip, blue cod, bluff oysters, paua patties.

The only food I'm aware of that is uniquely Australian are dim sims (yes, they are Australian!).

Ok so you're right. I didn't realise there was a difference between a Dim Sim and a Dim Sum. My bad!

It surprised me too!

Isn't dim sum like a Chinese banquet? Like tapas?

Cough, cough. That's an import, from China! Reading the history if it, it's akin to modern day Nike and Gucci knock offs. It's Chinese Gooseberry for real.

What you're quotting aren't recipes for the most part, just ingredients. In that sense, Aussies have kangaroo, barramundi, wallaby, possum, emu, bush tomatoes, quandong, bush bananas, pigfaces, etc... and they have as many recipes as Kiwis (which is to say not many) with their lamingtons, Anzac biscuits etc... Generally, Australia has a lot more bush ingredients than NZ, due to the variety of climates. The problem is, they hardly use them... Pigfaces are all over the place in Australia, and you can pick the fruits up anywhere (they're very good), but I've yet to see them in a restaurant. I think it's a shame bush cuisine isn't developped at all, Aussies have been rejecting native cooking for a long time, just surviving on British food and now immigrant food from Asia. I hope it changes some day, it's a shame we know more about Chinese or Indian cooking than traditional Aboriginal cooking... Australia SHOULD be a foodie destination, there should be regional cooking, because so far people eat exactly the same thing everywhere... The only thing that changes is seafood.

<EDIT> Seems someone beat me to it. And a nice post it was too. Oh well, as it's my 5th post here, I'll leave it.

Do you mean 'recipe'? Or produce? We've got kangaroo and emu meat, John Dory, Sydney rock oysters, macadamias ..... just to name a few.

Then we've got chiko rolls, ANZAC bikkies, lamingtons, Cherry Ripe, and pavlova!. Off the top of my head.

And if you claim 'hangi', we could claim barbecue.

Btw,
Kiwifruit is Chinese. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwifruit :P

Yes I did know about the Chinese Gooseberry! Pav is DEFINITELY Kiwi though.

ANZAC biscuits aren't strictly Australian, as by name they are half Kiwi also.

Barbecue is American. Burning snags and steaks on a glorified gas cooker is not barbecue!

Not according to some on the Wiki... "People have been doing meringue with cream for a long time, I don't think Australia or New Zealand were the first to think of doing that".

The name is irrelevant - just like Kiwifruit.
