Bear Grylls' Man vs Wild days appear to be over

Bear Grylls' days spent building ramshackle shelters and eating rotting sheep intestines appear to be over.

The Man vs Wild star has reportedly been fired from the popular and long-running show by the Discovery Channel over a contract dispute.

The Hollywood Reporter suggested Grylls, 37, was fired for refusing to star in two unannounced shows he was contracted for.

"Due to a continuing contractual dispute with Bear Grylls, Discovery has terminated all current productions with him," a network spokesperson told the website.

Seven seasons of Man vs Wild have aired since 2006, with Grylls pitting his skills in various locations around the world.

Each episode features Grylls taking on dangerous stunts, sleeping in the wild and eating something disgusting - usually some kind of dead animal.

Recently, the former British soldier featured several celebrities on the show, including actor Jake Gyllenhaal and comedian Will Ferrell.

The most recent season featured Grylls in New Zealand, showing off his survival skills in the South Island.

That episode aired here last Wednesday on the Discovery Channel.

couldnt help thinking it would end one of two ways.... he leaves the show, the show ends OR he gets so heinously injured or killed and they can the show because they realise he's been living on borrowed time with all the risks he takes...

Still have not seen it... But one of my scouts last night told me about how you can collect water by sucking on rocks... I still have not worked that one out, but apparently if bear can do it, it can be done.



Btw, it honestly took me over 12 months to realise that bear gryls was NOT some sort of device used for cooking large North American carnivores... Honest.

Can't bear (pun intended !) to watch that show. If you really were in a survival situation you wouldn't take any of the stupid risks that he does....
but that's 'reality' TV I suppose....actual reality is just not exciting enough.......

When I was an active Scouter I would have at least have checked out a couple of episodes to see what the Scouts were talking about or even emulating

Yes Macca81 also had time to do Leader of Adults Warrant ,have a Wife and two children one Scout and one Guide also had time to run Pioneering courses for Guides and assist at the ones we ran in the NW District every year for Scouts/Guides and Adults ,PM me for any other info you may want .

Sorry, must have been mis understood. I was joking about send my CV into Discovery to be considered as a replacement for Mr Grylls. That of course is ridiculous as no one used snail mail for things of that sort of inportance! I emailed it to them instead.

I agree Mark. I do treat it a bit tongue in cheek as I think his sometimes "I must do something really outrageous right now or die!" survival philosophy contradicts generally accepted wisdom to not panic and take the time to think things through. But I find many of the scenarios quite interesting and the locations are often stunning. I reckon he'll turn up on another network eventually. I think the show is too popular for someone else to not pick it up again in one form or another.

Bear Grylls is already plotting his comeback after being controversially dumped from popular TV adventure series Man vs Wild.

Grylls, a former British soldier turned TV survival star, was "terminated" from the show last week by the Discovery Channel over a reported contract dispute.

But in a series of messages to fans, Grylls has promised he'll be back on TV soon.

Taking to Twitter, Grylls began by saying: "I'll survive."

He followed that with: "But don't worry...I'll be drinking my pee again soon!"

He then wrote a quote from American self-improvement motivator Dale Carnegie: "All life is a chance. So take it! The person who goes furthest is the one who is willing to do and dare."

Then, just a day later, Grylls confirmed he was already working on a new show.

"Training hard today - gearing up for new missions! As my dad said: life is meant to be one great big adventure!"

He hasn't yet given any interviews, but after his axing Grylls' spokeswoman Heather Krug told the Hollywood Reporter: "Bear's goal has always been to make life-empowering shows for his many fans around the globe, and he has taken great risks to bring Discovery such award-winning programming over seven seasons.

"Bear has loved the Man vs Wild journey and looks forward to producing further cutting edge content again soon for his loyal audience."

I always take Bear's videos with me when jumping out of a perfectly good planes in remote areas to be by myself with the support crew. O'well, at least the target audience of pre-teen boys will have something to watch again. Bear might be doing a come back in a real life event like World Series Wrestling, but with crocodiles. Full credit to him as in real life he has taken some big hits and bounced back but his survival skill "training" as appearing on TV is about as realistic as a Hollywood car chase training learner drivers. Maybe Myth-busters does the Bear?

I think you misjudged his appeal. I know more than a few middle aged women who will be very distraught if he doesn't turn up on the screen again. Soon!

It entertaining, some awesome spots, he does some outrageous stuff- who cares if he's a bit crazy or its a bit scripted. More fun than half the other rubbish on TV! I look forward to Bears return.

I LIKE BEAR! It's a bit of fun, and there are some things he describes which might actually be useful in a survival situation. "Some".

If it all goes wrong and they're still alive, they can always get a helicopter out...

Sounds like how some people in seem to plan their walking trips.
