King or Flinders Island?

Postby Steve73 » Thu 27 Oct, 2011 3:25 pm

Hi Guys,

Just wondering which one would be better for a relaxing holiday for a few nights in a self contained cottage, or are both islands similar?

Does one have better local produce than the other? We love eating good, local food when away.

Thanks,
Steve

I'd go for Flinders for sure. To my knowledge there is a bit more to do there. Plus there are a few nice walks there. Worth checking out the heritage sites there too. I have a couple of uncles on King Island and from their description it sounds like its mostly just farming and fishing community, but that is just what I've heard, I haven't been there since I was 4 so I'm not sure what is over there really. Hopefully someone with some recent info can shed some light on it!

I REALLY want to visit both. Flinders for walking, and King for diving. But after the new golf course thats going ahead on King, I might wait for a few years and try to get 18 holes in on a world class course while there....
Nothing to see here.

The smell of the abbatoir in King Island as you disembark the aircraft will stay with you for life.

Whoever decided to build the abbatoir right next to the airport... bad decision. YUCK!

Been on King Island today for a couple of days and was a Flinders a couple of months ago with work.

For a few days, Flinders has more to offer with walks and mountains.

Not alot of night life on either.

Apparently King Island used to be largely rainforest before it was all cleared for farming. Only a few remnants left now.

Was on Flinders for work recently; scenery is amazing. Can't comment on King although the accountant from work here grew up on the island and yes it is mostly farming and dairy, certainly not as spectacular when it comes to the landscape.

Weather can be atrocious though!!

Yeah Flinders is fantastic, especially if you are into walking, swimming, sailing or fishing.

Spent a few nights / days on both Islands, they both have excellent food, scenery, the people are great,
If you go to King Island, try to book into one of Caroline's units at Devils Gap retreat.
