I'm with you Picaro!

Do I see many of you getting your back up over clearfell logging in OUR ancient forest ecosystems, dumping vast quantities of waste on OUR Barrier Reef, mining in OUR Tarkine, ripping up extensions to OUR WHA? All in OUR name, by OUR Government?

No, we get our backs up over an entirely optional social media device...

PS neilmny, take a look back at your various posts in that other thread, you continually made personal attacks on the 'Tasmanian elite'. Hypocrisy is another fabulous first world option, non?

Sorry old son that was aimed at a group and an attitude not an individual. Take another look.

Even worse, is when businesses have more information on Facebook than they do on their website - I have encountered that quite a few times, including such basic information as opening times. The problem being if they set up their page incorrectly and it can't be viewed without signing on. Although you would think they would have all the relevant information on their website, but no, that is too much trouble it seems.

Yep, I hear you matagi.

I found Facebook fantastic in the recent bushfires. Up to date, local, instant information relevant for my immediate locality. Often from people I knew on specific roads and properties.
The private messages are great, completely free and enable me to keep in contact with my kids without them having to have a mobile phone.
And another big bonus is being able to stay in contact with friends and acknowledge that you're aware of what's happening WITHOUT necessarily having to call them, lol.
We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box

Obsession in any form can put pressure on relationships....not just the binary examples.

I can remember when my son had a period of infatuation with IRC....FB is just one of the latest iterations. Personally I think Google+ is trashier, and far more rant worthy.

This looks like a good use of the facebook system OSM as long as the information is accurate as that is vital in an emergency.
There is a staggering amount of miss information that flies around in a crisis.

A bit off topic but after events here in Victoria I would not trust anything except the ABC for fire warnings and information (CFA web site excepted).
Not in 2009 (Black Saturday) but quite a while back, I was working on the other side of Melbourne when a report came through that my suburb (named) was on fire
(this was a commercial radio station reporting it) a so called on the spot female reporter stated very clearly that my suburb (clearly named again) had been
devastated by fire the truth was there was no fire in the actual suburb just a small bush fire on the side of Mt Dandenong that burnt no personal property.
There is no question that the situation was serious but there was no devastation or risk thereof. I have also heard many examples of exaggerated reporting since by
commericial TV and radio stations (you know anything to sell a few more adds). For people who live in fire danger areas information and warnings are a pretty touchy
subject these days.

I use FB for a number of reasons;

1/ I get a news feed from sources I trust, organisations I respect and interest groups I'm passionate about. Impossible via traditional media, truly designed to keep us ignorant.
2/ I have connected with MANY people, first on FB that I now count as either close friends or acquaintances of like mind. And yes, we see each other face to face regularly. Good people I would never have met face to face.
3/ Share what I'm up to with my networks.
4/ Source clients for my business(yes, it works).
5/ Keep in touch with friends interstate and overseas.
6/ The Messenger app is excellent, and free.

Twitter I use for an immediate newsfeed, and use it rarely, but when *&%$#! is going down, it can be an excellent tool.

Sure there's bad sides to it where kids in particular can get trapped, but that's where parenting steps in. Correct?
Ultimately if you put details of yourself up you aren't happy for the world to see....pffftt!!

This thread reminded me I hadn't logged on FB for a couple of weeks, so now I know my son has a new phone number. Thanks for the reminder.
And wouldn't most people send out an SMS rather than a FB post for that ? Kids !

Haha, look who's back. Why it's- The Trackmaster!

I use facebook but defend your right to not like it Neil!

It has a lot of useful purpose, can't think too deeply about the negatives some of it devastating especially for younger people already dealing with angst (or the creepy stuff like why everyone chooses to share friend lists, like CC on an email :? or why I see people with friends they appear to otherwise loathe! :? Or how it provides a platform for friends opinions that they wouldn't get away with in 'ordinary conversation :? Or how people from years past seem to assume friendship now when you really didn't like them- then :? ) Then apparently there are known cases of data sharing with government agencies, does that happen here?

Either way, you can just join with an email address to limit involvement. My dog has his own page under his own pseudonym (and growing list of followers that threatens mine :) )

Haha, anyhow.. a useful Tool.. so.. Trackmaster! , don't let me down now, I have you at 3/1 to not last the week out 8)

Ok, a bit cryptic? You ask some hard questions doogs, i'm lost for words.
Anyhow, point is, it's not a big deal in most cases to just copy the info rather than a link. Seems like a reasonable solution, i'm sure neilmny isn't the only one.

You are absolutely right! Those who can't easily differentiate reliable versus spammy messages should be guided off that dangerous social media called FB, similar to those who can't differentiate legit vs spam emails.

I use Facebook to share photos of my bushwalks with my facebook friends, as well as those on this forum. I do think that it is inconsiderate to post links that require membership to view, however, it is possible to allow people to view things on facebook, even if you don't have an account.

For example - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... ac60619943

Ohh IRC, I wasted so much of 2007-8 on IRC. At that point most had migrated to other chat services so it was a really nice community.

I do tend to use fb less and less as social media and more for organising groups of people.
It's like a BBS system without the 128baud modem sound and without server retention limitations.

Started with 1200baud. That was fast! Wish I had thought of FB at that time... Stupidly I just followed "choose option 1, 2, 3 or 4" styled BBS.
