Huh! The chook poo in my parents compost bins just spontaneously caught fire by itself and set the rest of the compost smouldering even in the rain. I saw the smoke from a few doors down the road and went to investigate. I think I managed to put it out, but will have to keep an eye on it. Four planks on the front burnt right through.

I've seen the same thing happen with compost on a garden bed. Scary and weird!

I have seen this in compost as well. Its all that heat generated by microbe activity!

And they keep telling us this is a good thing to put on our gardens.

A whole load of poo ignited from nowhere last week in this very forum!

I had a feeling this thread would turn into crap jokes...

the farmer on the next property just had two piles of feed go in one day, last week. The cows all stood around watching it burn, and even stealing nibbles from the edges.

I hear that you can grow sh@t hot vegetables with that kind of compost

I'm very disappointed. It turns out that a house guest had cleaned out the heater and put the coals on the compost. So it wasn't just the chook poo after all. So much for a good story.

Hey, at least they did think to clean the thing out. It's better than leaving a mess, isn't it?

Well, if they hadn't clean it out, the compost bins wouldn't need to be rebuilt (it's three large timber bins, each 1m x 1m - one of these has 4 panels that now need replacing). Nice and tidy in the house though.

My neighbour’s compost bin caught fire and set fire the surrounding eucalypt leaf litter which burnt under the fence into our yard. Our yard is heavily mulched with pea straw all over (250M2). So that caught fire. Luckily it had rained recently (a very light shower) and the pea straw only burnt where it was sheltered from the rain. So under the grapefruit and under the wheel barrow was burnt out. Exit 1 wheel barrow wheel and 1 very sick grapefruit. A bunch of irrigation went up in smoke, but I was due to re-build that anyhow.

This happened while we were out and only noticed it a day or so after the event and had me very puzzled as to the cause until I looked over the fence.

The fire was started by the neighbour dumping his combustion stove ash into the compost bin without checking is had cooled down.
