I read Life of Pi a while ago and was dubious when I heard they'd made a movie
I was pleasantly surprised
Another very good Indian/Canadian book is 'Tales of Firozsha Baag' by Rohinton Mistry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rohinton_MistryAnd another Indian one about a twin brother and his sister, who, as children in the 1970's (?) lived in a family factory in a village by a river, and their mother had an affair with a worker. It has a boat they took across the river and a visiting cousin drowned, and the lover was wrongly accused. Really good atmospheric story. i'm getting annoyed I can't recall it's name.

We can learn a lot from crayons. They come in different shapes and colours, but they all have to live in the same box
