These companies need to start taking responsibility for the huge amount of garbage they generate and the massive destruction they cause the environment.

"I was brought up in SA and the 5c deposit scheme was part of our lifestyle. My sister and I used to make pocket money by riding around on our bikes collecting cans.
We had and still have a Coke bottling factory in SA and it never collapsed as part of a deposit scheme.

Industry will ALWAYS pressure for the WEAKEST restrictions, the LEANEST taxes and the GREATEST privileges. But if a courageous government can drag them kicking and screaming to the table of compromise over environmental issues, then necessity can turn those same industries into the greatest of innovators and the best drivers of necessary change. It just takes a COURAGEOUS government to do so. So far your government is acting like a TIMID government prepared to succeed to the loudest bully.
Time to stand up and show some backbone against mega-industry, opinion polls and economic arse-kissing and differentiate yourself from an economics-only narrow interest party!"

Well said. Its depressing that we have to fight over such a simple thing..the idea that a company should play a role in the cleanup of the enormous pollution generates as part of doing business.
Not to mention the massive medical costs of the obesity epidemic (paid for by the taxpayer of course) for which soft drinks play a significant role.
