... it is a bit curious over why congratulations are offered to the grandparent.
Unless said grandparent was present at the time of coitus offering advice on conception, I suppose.

Wollemi, grandparents are congratulated because it's something very special, and doesn't happen to everyone. At least that is my guess. You would congratulate someone if they won the lottery no doubt!
Thank you for the congratulations people, just couldn't resist letting the world know.

Because they were (quite obviously) successful in raising their own children which has now resulted in a continuation of the family line

Congrats Taurë-rana!

Thank Strider, I was also going to try and say something like that but didn't manage to word it properly.

Yes - a special time of life.
When the years get wound back and you see it all starting again and see in your children the 'you' coming out and then in their children.
Have fun Taurë-rana and savor every moment.

Congrats! At least you'll be young enough to get them into bushwalking

Wollemi- it's not as if she said this was her 42nd or even 12th grandchild... I wonder who you think will look after you as you age, pay your pension, blah blah blah

Congratulations on being a grandparent.
I myself have had mixed feelings about being the parent of 3 kids rather than just replacement [ my son was an accident; I think; although I can't be sure about that- perhaps my ex just wanted another baby] the whole success of the human race has been because of grandparents
We take the day to day load off the kids and allow them to get on with the difficult job of staying alive and earning a living.
Congratulations are also warranted in a historical sense for having lived so long as to have seen the grandchildren born

Wow, each to his own but some of the previous reactions to someone sharing a common but nevertheless happy life event border on forum troll behaviour.

OK So I'm a dinosaur
Also a firm believer in ZPG but my 5 sisters only have one child each so I think as a family we are just below replacement.
I will rephrase
Being a "GOOD" grandparent is hard work and a joy
Good discussion tho

Really think ILUVSWTAS was just having a bit of a light-hearted interstate stir Wollemi! Lighten up, the issues you have brought up are serious and no-one is denying that but this thread was just to share my joy in a new little life! If we think too much about what is happening to the world, we are likely to get totally depressed. It's important to take joy in the good things about humans and the world to retain a sense of balance

Thank you. It displays a bit big for my liking, but it is a nice photo. They are so amazingly tiny and vulnerable. You forget how little they are.

Congratulations T-R, I'm a bit jealous as we have none in spite of having a 33year old son and a 35 year old daughter.
Hopefully in the future.
Enjoy, for they grow up quickly.

Yeah, that happened to me four weeks ago, when I put in my notice.
Of course, today's smile - when I finally walked out of there - was even wider and is going to be permanent.

Old post, seemingly renewed with NNWs change of direction (maybe NNE now?!)
Congratulations...6 months down the track. No doubt now crawling and getting in to things.
Thank god I haven't got any grand kids yet....4 daughters between 12 and 22. Not in any way ready...
