Tracks by Robyn Davidson
(Bloomsbury $24.99)

Tracks is a re-issue of the 1980 narrative from an ex-Brisbane-bohemian-turned-Outback-girl and-Aboriginal-rights-supporter who trekked 2700km across the Gibson Desert from Alice Springs to the Indian Ocean with four camels.

Read this recently, it's a pretty amazing story.
If I recall correctly it begins standing on the Alice Springs station with $6 in her pocket and her dog!

They finally made the film last year. Should be screening this year, hopefully.

Robyn's other books, essays and short stories are great reading too.

Tracks might be the book responsible for my dreams of walking around Australia. It was part of the curriculum in school in 86. Her sense freedom, appreciation of Nature's beauty and determination to prove her critics wrong resonated in me even at the age of 14 :D
