Bushwalk Australia

There is an opportunity for me to move to Tasmania for my work. Looks like a base out of the north from Launceston. I tend not to like a crowd so I'm wondering if there are any recommendations for some of the surrounding villages/hamlets etc to call home. I'm hoping your local knowledge can get me looking in the right spots.

Ohhh I do so envy you!! I'd love to move back. Unfortunately I can't assist with locations near Launceston though

If you don't mind a 35km drive my choice would be Westbury, but there are a number of pretty little hamlets along the Meander Valley Highway.

Or perhaps one of the villages along the Tamar.

Lots of possibilities, but it might help to know how much traveling time to work would be acceptable and how antisocial you want to be.

Check Tamar valley (lots of small towns/villages), Northern Midlands (Evandale, Perth, Longford, Cressy), Meander valley (Westbury, Deloraine, Mole Creek), etc.

As an example I live by the river in Perth -19 Km south of Launceston, population about 3000. Most people actually talk to each other.
Good local shopping facilities and primary school.
Leaving home 25 minutes before I need to be just about anywhere in Launceston works well.
2 hours or so to Cradle, East coast or Hobart, and Ben Lomond or Western Tiers closer than that.

Gosh Chis, to many to look at quickly but I will churn through them. Job requires state wide travel so I thought I might as well see what is around the fringes. Perth sounds nice and 25 mins to Launceston is a easy done.

Just me, so schools etc are not a priority and on the antisocial, I'm just tired or waiting in line like a sheep and then be grunted at by someone who doesn't want to be there at all. I like good company it's just getting harder to sift the wheat from the chaff.

gayet, you will just have to make more frequent visits to walk and satisfy that urge

I'm not really biased - spent much of my youth on the West Tamar and still love the area, but if you're traveling throughout the state Perth is at the junction of the Midlands (Hobart-Launceston) and Bass (Lonnie-NW) Highways. No, I'm not Real Estate and have no plans to move

I'm biased towards Deloraine - possibly Aus's best small town. But Perth, Cressy or Evandale are what I first thought of. You don't want to be too close to Launnie, it's a horrid place. Not as bad as Burnie, (*shudder*) of course . . .

Launie isn't a bad place NNW. It's just a shame its so far out of town.

It's sounding like a good excuse for a trip over for a few days to look around.

We travelled around a few years ago looking for somewhere new to live. Our goal was to choose somewhere, rather than live somewhere because of work. We have never regretted our choice to live in Deloraine.

If choosing that attitude to Burnie, i'd recommend Hobart
Longford's a nice town. I like the riverfront in Deloraine (and the views if you get them).

I live in Westbury. It was a nice town. I grew up here as a kid and moved back about 15 years ago. Sadly it is not the nice town it used to be. Yes geographically it is still the same but it was once a town full of generations of locals who of course all knew each and everyones business. These days its full of people that have no real connection to the town, feral parents and out of control kids. Yes I am being a bit judgemental but thats how we see it.

We now like Longford, it is a much nicer town. Longford has a far better infrastructure than Westbury, its closer to 'town' and it is a real pretty little area on the south esk river. If your buying then both towns are affordable although we have recently been looking at some real estate closer to Launceston and there are better financial decisions to be had in other suburbs.

Thanks guys, great input so far. So many little towns and villages in and around Launceston.

I like the look of Deloraine and Longford looks like a good regional centre with every thing you could need.

More research and trip needed

Easier to get lost than Canberra and the worst one-way road system in Australia. At least some time in the past 20 years they realised the importance of signs informing people of one-way roads rather than leaving them to find out by driving into a wall of oncoming traffic . . .

Sadly that is a sign of the times Dan, and few locations are not affected by the bogan element to some degree.

But yes, I very much like Longford too.

I have put a lot of thought into where I would choose to live in Tassie. Swansea and Orford on the east coast rate highly, or even Coles Bay, but all lack a little in amenities. Then for a while I was quite taken by a pretty little house at Primrose Sands.
Deloraine in the north and Cygnet in the south rate highly for amenity, trendiness and an alternative lifestyle, Deloraine probably more affordable. Westbury and Longford seem very affordable.
Even more remote locations like Strahan, Bridport or Stanley have their charms.

Ron I love the East coast and one day I may even buy something down that way in readiness for retirement.

At the moment we need to be central to Launceston as our adult children (who still live at home) work in launceston and in a couple more years our youngest daughter will be schooling in Launceston but at the moment she goes to school at Deloraine. So one day when all the children have flown the coup I am very interested in the East.

I really like the St Marys area. It has a lot of nice bush and it is only 10-15 minutes down the hill to the coast. The facilities in regards to larger supermarkets etc certainly lack in the area but I think we can work with that.
