Though there is an argument they shouldn't have been made of that stuff in the first place. What happened to wood!

That's what I was thinking.
I wonder what the normal expected lifespan is? When to replace? Surely it would just degrade and eventually start disintegrating in any event?

Looks to me to be polystyrene encased within thick plastic of some kind.... probably chosen for less maintenance over the long term than steel pontoons.
