Pay It Forward??

So i got to thinking last nite after visiting the hammock forum.

They have a big community and they have a permanent thread where they share gear on a pay-it-forward basis, the recipient pays postage only and gets the gear for free, the only requirement it that the last recipient has to put something else up on the site and send it on to the next person.
I am doing something similar for Andrew with a couple of pair of old and cheaper gaiters, so in a way I have already started.
(BTW Andrew i am still looking for pair # 3 on;y 1/2 5he pair so far )

I think it is a good idea if we can trust each other and postage costs can be locked in as there are the fixed price satchels at 3 & 5 kg

Any thoughts on the matter, obviously we all have stuff that we don't use, too good to throw away and not worth selling on ebay.

Hi all,

I have seen a similar thread on another forum that I visit (unrelated to walking) and I thought it would work really well here. Basically the idea is that we often upgrade gear that has some life left in it, but at times the upgraded gear may have little commercial value in terms of sale.

Hence the idea to pass it on to someone who may need the equipment (and therefore not to landfill). Hopefully this thread might help someone new to walking fulfil that gear list for their upcoming walk or may simply fill a void in someones gear list.

I would suggest to caveat's on this thread, firstly the gear needs to have some life left i.e this should not be utilised to pass on junk. I would also ask that those who are in a comfortable financial position, that obtain something from the list, please post an item when possible.

To start us going I am placing a dehydrator on the list. It is 10 years old but still going well. I upgraded as I wanted extra capacity to dehydrate trip food faster. Monika has already pm'd me and is first in line for the item subject to being able to post to her.

idea's great but I personally find the hassle of sorting out how to get it to the other person often isn't worth it.

Mine either goes to friends and family or to the Salvo's. Whenever family visits they see my pile and go, "that looks nice" and a few hours later they've talked me into giving it to them even when I was going to sell the thing in the first place.


I also find when someone has to pay for something they tend to think a little bit more about whether they really need it. That being said, some of us still end up with too much stuff!

I've been thinking about this, I'm coming around to the thought that even postage should be part of the gift. This also means that the gift will probable never be bigger than will fit in a 3kg pre-paid parcel.
Smaller less costly postage is of course even better.
Another suggestion too. "THE MYSTERY BOX" but that would have to be postage paid I think, we decide on a certain box size ( it needs to fit inside that 3kg envelope ) and we put all our unwanted junk in and pass the parcel, only proviso is the contents need to be worth MORE than the postage.
How-ever I'm broke so if some-one wants to pay the postage I'll start the ball rolling here with a heavy duty thermal in size large, US Army ECWS polypropylene in khaki, super warm and a hoodless Helly-Hansen wind jacket also in Large

The point is to get gear to someone who will use it so the mystery box kinda defeats the purpose...better to list the item and have it go to someone who will

but there is a devil inside me that imagines a box of valuable but useless gear making its way around the country from person to person until it finds a home.

Nice idea but has pitfalls.
What I have sometimes done is use older gear on a day walk or overnighter and given it to someone out there enjoying themselves but with lesser gear/budget.

Thanks for the thoughts, Moondog. Unfortunately the jacket no longer resembles an oilskin at all. Greyish, light showing through all over Looks like it'd be throwing $ away.

I probably need to think a bit - probably it will be great to have the tent. It'll be a bit further down the track, working up from day walks. Anxiety levels of the kids are typically very high, coming out in interesting ways - so not quite sure re the one person tent. Will get back to you.

Gear Request! Rain gear, boots, shoes

Here's a variation on the theme. I take some disadvantaged kids / teens on walks, and have a small collection of reasonable gear - and gathering some good gear from time to time. Hoping to do more in the next school hols.

I just lent a friend's son some stuff for his first backpack - and forgot to specify anything re cleaning. Contrary to the labels, the oiled japara jacket and waterproof overpants went thru the wash, now irretrievable They've offered to pay, which is great, but it's very hard to find them at garage sales where I got those from. Replacement value >>>> what I paid if I buy them elsewhere.

I wondered if anyone has a large, old but-still-keep-the-wind-and-some-rain-out-jacket they would like to donate. and / or large overpants (ok if not breathable). Or any other size for that matter, but it's the large ones I lost.

In Tassie - any walking boots / shoes that still have a bit of wear - probably lighter weight rather than leather for the blister factor. Some of our kids only have slip-on shoes with holes in them Rather than giving them to an op shop or tip shop, maybe I can arrange a pick up sometime.

I have not worked for years but volunteer in conservation projects, adventure race, mountain bike event etc. I would be ok with paying postage if somebody was upgrading kit & had something to offload. My aims whether I buy or a gift are a Bivy or hike pole tent, tarp for shelter, a hike pack weighing under 1.5kg, a light day pack.which is accepted in airline carryon as I do hitchhike a lot but can't to.Tasmania or places too far like north Qld.

If anyone needs gaiters, I have two pair to offload. Both are almost brand new, with just one overnight walk each. One or two charcoal/dirt stains, but otherwise in mint condition.

My Nike Dri-fit top now free to good home, I wore it last week and it now has a permanent tomato sauce stain on the front LOL

Sorry not in market MD but while you have this reactivated I thought it an idea to bump it and say I have some gear (not really sorted yet) that I'm happy to pass on to any newbies for pickup in Perth area.
Nothing really flash but an old pack or two and some cheap self inflating mats and maybe some other gear.
