After a bit of research I've decided to get a "rooftop bag":

I know it won't be as aerodynamic as a hard and shaped pod, but the convenience of being able to fold it up and stuff it into a drawer makes up for that. And at around $60 seems a much better deal than a $600+ pod...

Just did a 3 month half loop with a Thule Box on top of my ix35 and had no issues at all. It was great for keeping dust, dirt and water out of our gear.

We carried soft duffles and sleeping gear in ours and kept the heavier stuff in the back of the car.

I didn't notice any significant loss in fuel efficiency, the manual said it was rated to 120km but it handled pretty well at 150km or so on the Stuart highway with no worries at all.

You can also stuff quite a bit of kit in them, all in all, very happy with the purchase.
