Question regarding tent space

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

For anyone thinking of an inexpensive three man tent, I have a suggestion.

http://www.karrimor.com/karrimor-xlite- ... e=78311516

Cheap and cheerful.

I have one of these, and whilst I would have to think hard about taking it somewhere really dreadful it has done good service in general bushwalking conditions (i.e. Not SW Tas, Sth Island, or Patagonia !). Pretty heavy, but it can sleep three normal sized people well, and the huge vestibule can handle the large packs. The side entrances are very convent. Some of the stitching on mine was a little frayed, and the cord around the zips falls off easily, but it is waterproof and weighs about the same per capita as the average two person tent. Head height is ok too.

Of you can just cram into a Macpac Olympus. I once spent a week in Far North Qld sharing an Olympus with two other, big, lads. Now that was squalid......

Didn't know Karrimor was still going.

That tent looks like a far better choice than most of the chain store crap sold here.

I think that would be something I would look at it if I had a car with me. Probably a touch to heavy to be hiking with for 8-9 days.

JohnS
You have a very small budget and getting a LW or UL tent with the space you want and the weight you want to carry isn't going to be easy if even possible given the small amount of money you have allowed. I am always having to compromise and it seems cost is always my biggest factor
Tarps are cheap and lightweight but have big drawbacks in bad weather
Consider this tho; a hire tent will cost you "X" dollars and will be always at the heavier institutional weight end of the market, why not just use that hire cost as the minimum you would need to spend

and see what the advantage is to purchasing
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart

I think I'm going to go with the One Planet Wurley suggested on the previous page. I have a One Planet backpack and it is a pretty tough piece of equipment. I've made a few phone calls regarding the tent and it appears as though it's a decent piece of gear. It's a little heavier than I was hoping for, but I guess beggars can't be choosers. Still, 1.75kgs per person isn't too bad.

190cm of width. I'm jealous. When you're on day six of your trip and your mate's BO is starting to get to you, you'll be glad to be able to put some distance between you two. :-)

Picked up the Wurley today. The previous owner was kind enough to get everything out and set it up for me. Great looking piece of equipment and very roomy inside. Managed to beat her down on price and bought it for $200. Testing it out this weekend. Can't wait.

Appreciate everyone's thoughts and advice in this thread.
