anyone still use trangia/alchy setup?

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

anyone still use trangia/alchy setup?

Postby missingdna » Sat 30 Aug, 2014 10:08 am

as the title says, who uses this style of stove when hunting/camping?

been going through some of my camping gear that was in storage and i found my old trangia (rip off) stove.
i remember changing to a gas snow peak giga for ease of use, but seeing the old stove has made me keen to dust it off and fire her up.

most stories with photos show a gas stove of some type in the background in camp, i was wondering if anyone still carries the trangia, and why they prefer it to a gas set up...

Seem to me that most Trangia users cook whilst a lot of gas users only boil water.
Obviously you can do either with both but for just boiling there are a lot of smaller/lighter and more efficient kits available now.
My Caldera Cone is brilliant for boiling water but could not cook inside a 550ml cup.
About 10-15 years ago when entering a hut half of the folk there were using Trangias. Not so much now but maybe that is only my impression.

I hear that all the schools and outdoor ed types still use trangias. Not so much for any benefit inherent to them, besides the fact that they last forever, so why fix what isn't broke. having used both, I far prefer the gas. the trangia has some benefits, but not for what I do, and not for the price of a set (cost and weight) I have toyed around with beer-can burners, and I think that would make a good option for short, super-light trips. But I like food too much.

Yes I use a trangia both large and small and I also use a gas stove too, sometimes I will take both with me.
I also like the comment that you cook with a trangia.
I can also cook food with the gas one but it is an old school one not jetboil so you can slow cook reasonably well.

I had a jetboil for a while but found it best suited to cooking water....
changed to a snow peak giga which i find a far better heat source for cooking. Just miss the quiet of a alchy stove i think...lol

Only really for overnight summer trips, as then the light weight really shines, otherwise I'll use one of two gas cookers.

Still use my Trangia all the time. Its bombproof, foolproof and I know exactly how much fuel I have left. I do a lot more than just boil water and always have a cooked meal twice a day. Porridge of a morning and then a home dehydrated meal in the evening.
I also like that I can just put water on to boil and not have to hover over it while its going. I can head off to the loo or go take a photo of something and not stress cos it might be boiling the bottom out of the pot or something.

Gas Trangia for me. Not a fan of the time the metho takes to work, particularly in cold & breezy conditions, but love the Trangia with it's gas burner (and an inverted canister when it's cold). Also have a Jetboil Sol that I use a fair bit and it's great for boiling water, but not a shade on the Trangia as an all rounder. I've used a lot of gas stoves (on canister, off canister, invertable/not) and while they all have their place, as an all round package a just think the Trangia is fantastic.

I also have a gas burner in my Trangia, and because it has the pre-heat tube, the canister can be inverted for liquid feed making it very good in colder conditions (where alcohol is difficult to get going).

I have the large Trangia but these days I only use it on trips where we are sharing cooking between 3 or more people. Otherwise I take a much smaller and lighter gas cooker. Even my smaller light weight cooker (Kovea Moonwalker) was chosen because I can cook real food on it, not just boil water (it can turn down really low and has a good wide footpring and not too high and unstable). It did try an even smaller lighter cooker (Kovea Supalite) but wasn't happy with it in the end.

Well the Trangia does have the best windscreen of all stoves [ the defunct SIGG Tourist no longer counts I guess] and remote gas mod makes perfect sense

We have both sizes of Trangia and are fairly big eaters. The 27 is fine for just me when walking, but we take the 25 when on the bikes together. I've recently been playing with a MSR Whisperlite that was given to me and it's a fiddly, temperamental, messy thing by comparison. I will be keeping both and using them selectively I think. For compact car camping or bike touring, the Trangia is king purely because it's simple and flexible. Having lugged 15kg around all weekend I'm looking at lightening everything I can so the MSR might come into play.

Trangia with gas burner for car camping. Too heavy and bulky for walking.

I think that really depends on the walk, in snow the difference in fuel consumption because of the excellent windscreen may make the extra weight worthwhile, even more so with a gas stove unit. Note tho, that I don't own or use one and this is conjecture on my part

I used to use a jetboil but got sick of having to take a spare cylinder in case the current partial one ran out. Now use a sidewinder but with s trangia burner. Means I can cook as well as just top up the alcohol bottle before each trip. I find the alcohol harder to light sometimes but eventually get there.

Another benefit of sidewinder is multiple fuels: alky, solid fuel, wood.

I have a Trangia Mini which I was quite happy with. I also used to carry the fuel in a medium size Trangia bottle.

I don't know why so few people talk about or use the Trangia Mini. It also uses the same burner as the larger sets.

The last few trips I have used a gas burner but with my Trangia Mini frying pan, pot and handle/tongs.

I wanted to see why everyone likes gas so much. I am neutral on the issue.

In the US, interestingly, it seems to me they mainly use alcohol and not gas.

I have a Trangia Mini. I used to take it on short walks, either one night or even cold weather day walks when I thought a hot beverage would be a nice thing to have.

I converted to top mount gas stoves for general use but have occasionally gone back to try out alcohol burners. Each time I have not been satisfied with the performance of any of them, including the Mini. For example, I was going to climb The Nose on El Capitan with a friend and, although it was early summer, we both thought that a little morning coffee or tea was worth the weight of a small stove. So I got out the Mini and tested it. I put out on the patio on a cool, foggy day and fired it up. It burned and burned and burned and ten minutes later the little half liter pot of water was still not boiling. Then I got out my Snow Peak GigaPower gas stove. It's heavier, mostly because of the canister itself. But I had a half liter of water boiling in a few minutes. Which stove to take on The Nose? It was an easy decision to make.

I have the Mini, a 25 and 27 set, which I use all the time. Since I'm the cook in the family I often do a meal for the wife/kids and at the same time experiment with "solo" meals for myself. Kind of get it right in the kitchen at home first then try them when I'm out and about. Wife just sighs when she see's various Trangia bits bubbling away on kitchen bench.

Mostly I use Trail Designs Caldera cone setups in various sizes, though I often use the Trangia burner because it simmers so well.
Still like to see a titanium Trangia in the 27 size........

So how does it work? Does the gas equalise between the two?
Weighing the canister is of course an indication of remaining gas, if you know the tare weight. But I got caught out one cold morning; less comes out :-0

the trick with the whisperlite is to do through maintnance between trips. yes, they are messy, and heavy, but for a pressurized liquid fuel stove, they are quiet. Compared to stuff like the old XKG stove and other "jet engine" stoves, they are a delight. The only real advantage is that you can converse near one.

Can either cool the lower canister (freezer) or warm the upper one (warm water).

For cold weather you need a stove with a pre-heat loop so you can invert the canister and run the stove on liquid fuel instead.

Reverting back to my Metho burner Trangia would be akin to me using my SVEA 123 Shellite stove both excellent in their day however the clean gas burners I now use will boil and simmer and leave those old stoves for dead and yes you can still use the larger Trangia pots if needs be for group cooking depending on your choice of burner however the FMS -300t may be a wee bit small for a bigger pot.
