cheaper tents

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

cheaper tents

Postby tregal » Sun 01 Mar, 2015 8:11 pm

Hi,

About to embark on a short ride ( 3 or 4 days ) and I need a tent ! Unfortunately the one who must be obeyed does not want me spending a huge amount :)

Basically I wanted to find out of anyone has used these two tents

http://www.anacondastores.com/camping-h ... BP90035737

or
http://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/mannagu ... tent/td164

A second hand tent would also work, but I have not had much luck finding one near Brisbane.

While I don't have all the limitations of a walker I still don't want to be lugging more weight than i need to.

Any suggestions welcome

I don't have either but just recently bought a cheap tent (got a Marmot limelight on special from Mountain Designs) anyway when I was looking and researching I looked at the Denali for my kids and apart from having a personal problem with anaconda, their service and their products; when I googled denali tents I found an ex anaconda employee who said never buy one as they get constant returns.

I have some Mannagum self inflating mats and have been happy with them to date. If you have time on your side watch ebay and gumtree for a few weeks or the trading section here, I picked up a Vango banshee (not a top of the range tent but pretty much the same as that mannagum) last week for my kids for $80, the week before that there was a MSR fling that went for $40.

wouldn't bother with the denalli, from what I've seen of those tents in the field, they are pretty rough. Might be worth hitting the brisbane DFO if you can, see what the MD store there has on.

I don't know about other people but my denali storm 3p tent is fantastic quality for the $150 I paid for it, easily as good as any of the more expensive tents I own or have seen for sale but just heavier. I've been using it regularly for 5 years now in all conditions.

Something like this could be good http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Vango-Helix- ... 20f74d96d7
I haven't used one but the dimensions and weight are good and Vango is a good product.
Sorry it's an ebay link.

Personally I wouldn't buy a Denali. I have used one in very wet conditions and I think I would have stayed drier if I slept outside in the rain.

I can vouch for Vango tents, there really decent for the money. If you have a mountain design near you the Eureka Taron 3 goes on sale often and I think I got one for about $175. Good tent and plenty or room for two. Black wolf also do some decent cheaper hiking type tents (check out snowys website for ideas.)

Other option is monitor the classifieds on this site and pick up a used tent. There's probably something suitable for sale in the list now if you look through it...

While the website says these are single skin they are actually a mesh inner, do not buy tho unless they are on sale, as they are overpriced normally to allow "Huge" sale discounts; but that is the age we seem to live in. Not a winter tent but they are reasonably well made and reasonably compact/LW

They do look like the 3F UL that are sold from China too

Thank you for the feed back !

I have now added vango into the mix of brands to look at ( because I just needed more work :) )

I have added that Ebay listing to my watchlist if it doesn't creep to high that will be a good buy !

I threw up an inquiry last weekend to a used Eureka tent in the classifieds here, but have not heard back hence the looking else were.

Looks fine for what you want but price could creep up on Ebay. There's a Macpac stellar in the classifieds that might be worth you looking at (no association to seller by the way.)

I haven't used one, but I saw two of those Denali tents a fortnight ago. I had a quick look and they seemed reasonable enough. Most of the tents in that price range are much the same - reasonably durable, but fairly heavy.

That Wildearth site also has the Vango Blade 100 for $145 -http://www.wildearth.com.au/buy/vango-blade-100-1-person-hiking-tent/VTE-BL100-J if you only need sleep one.

Rain and bug, but I dont have a bivvy so looking more for a tent.

Waiting, on a response to a few second hand tents. If that fails I am going to go for a Vango .

I got my Trangia today Little mini one :) going to go to pick up a thermrest mat this week as well and I should have most of the gear I need.

Tregal, keep in mind that most one man (oops person) tents are very skinny on space.
If you want yourself and your gear in the tent go for a 2 and if you have a companion go for 3.
For instance my F10 Helium 200 (2 person) is great for me but I doubt I could sleep in it even with
my better half of 38 years........but I really got it just for solo use.

Hi, I just picked up the Vango Blade 100, a 1 person tent, this is quite compact packaged, and for a 1 person quite roomy.
You can also attach the fly to the main body and never need to put up either separately again, great for a quick easy pitch.
