TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Types of backpacking shelters: pros & cons

n last month’s SD LIVE event, I discussed the pros and cons of common backpacking shelters — specifically double-wall tents, single-wall tents, tarp systems, bivy sacks, and hammocks. My presentation was a relatively unbiased assessment of the available options, and also intentionally brand- and product-neutral. While I definitely prefer some shelter types over others (refer to my gear lists or The Ultimate Hiker’s Gear Guide), my preferences may not be appropriate for backpackers who encounter different environmental conditions and/or who have a different objective in their outings.

I still really like his "warm and wet doesn't matter unless you will soon be cold and wet". Well, that and the fast-drying trail runners as blister prevention.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

Just thinking of rain gear..
Iv'e tried wet, unfortunately it usually comes with wind and the cold is a given down here as we know, so I don't really see a better layer than a shell.. which might as well try to be waterproof for as long as possible. Though I did have a cheap non-breathable rain shell as well last week and it was nice to put on when stopped (dry inside to go over a layer) and cuts the wind much better than event shell. Not SUL though.. carrying both :?
