TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Australian brand coolers

Postby Orseolo » Sat 14 Mar, 2015 5:46 am

Hello all,

I'm planning a trip from the states to Australia for sometime next year, and had a few questions:

Most of my gear I'll be bringing to Australia with me, but I was curious if their are any high end rotomolded coolers being sold in Australia? I'm not sure if any of you are familiar with Yeti coolers which are the main brand sold in the US. I've heard of a company called Gear Up coolers that were being sold in Australia, and I'm curious if anyone had any reviews or suggestions in regards to them. I'm looking for approximately a 50 liter cooler, so I'd rather not ship one from the US to down there.

Thanks everyone, real excited to see your beautiful country in 2016!

I can't answer specifically on the 50 litre but they are available and this is the result of a quick google http://www.wildearth.com.au/shop/campin ... olers/1233
I suggest google "buy (the product) australia" and search from there. Be prepared to pay a lot more
for anything you buy over here as we are in a constant state of rip off.

Open ended question How much do you want to spend> BTW a 50 liter cooler is pretty small downunda if you are talking "High-end" as they are made up to about bout 400 litre but those are laid up and not rotomolded. Most are about 12 hour rated and cost up to $50-
Often considered a disposable item as they UV degrade so quickly
never heard of "Gear Up"
Where in the USA are you from?
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart

Google is your friend :D

Eva Kool in Queensland make laid up versions as mentioned by MD and also what I think is moulded polyethylene. There are other manufacturers of similar products, mainly in Queensland. There also cheap inports.

The better locally made items are high quality products.

The combination of very hot weather, the popularity of fishing, and the popularity of cold beer mean that there are some very, very good coolers made here. I've kept ice for at least 5 days in a 40L Evakool in late summer. As said, 40L is regarded as small up north. Local terminology is usually "Esky"

Evakool would be my recommendation also for an Australian made esky. I have their 12volt camping fridge which is essentially their esky with a motor attached. It has worked non-stop for the last 3-4 years, without issue.

evacool can take some pretty severe punishment, and since you don't pay the import markup like you would on a coleman, I feel they are better value for the dollar.

I can personally attest to the Waeco Cool Ice, I've got both the 22L and 55L - both are great. The bigger they get, the thicker the sidewalls are to compensate for increased internal space to be cooled. A friend has a Techni-Ice, also impressive. Eva Cool's are basically the same as the Cool Ice. It would be interesting if the companies stated what insulation they used! Would make buying Iceboxes/Eskis a lot easier.

Got a little Waeco as well as the EvaKool. A feature of the little Waeco (and the bigger ones for all I know) is the smooth profile with recessed latches. Its very good for packing two to a few days solo stuff in and packing amongst other stuff without snagging or rubbing holes with sharp corners. Also insulates very well, which isn't exactly a precise comment
