TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Replacement screen for Garmin eTrex 30?

Postby NathanaelB » Thu 19 Mar, 2015 7:38 pm

Someone dragged a 40-litre tub of herbicide over it ... minor scratches, thought I'd try buff them out. Buffing wheel melted plastic, now made a hundred times worse.

I can live with it, but if I can get it done for less than $80 I'd love to get the screen replaced.

Ideas?

You can buy replacement fronts/backs, it might take some googling but here's an example:

Thanks, didn't even consider getting the part and doing it myself! Hopefully easier than trying to do minor maintenance on an eTrex H

If you are going to replace the screen anyway, try using the cut and polish paste used for cars.
I did that with the screen of my Kestrel (weather thingo) , came up like new.

All to do with the grit rating of the compound. Toothpaste is another that's safe to use in general. Then there are those green and yellow polishing compounds for sharpening knives and on jewellery.
Just move it!

If you go the replacement front, it's an easy disassembly process. You just need to get some Torx screw drivers. There are 2xTorx T6 screws on the back case, and once you remove the battery back, there are another 4xT6 screws (two at top and two at bottom). Once they are removed, you should see the circuit board. There is one last Torx T5 holding the circuit board to the front casing, roughly near the joystick.

Quite a simple process for a waterproof device.

So, here's how it went with replacing just the screen, with a replacement part from Russia:
