TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Question for the historians among us

When did the wearing of long underwear of the close fitting shaped type come into common usage?
Common to see movies set in the 1840's to 1900's showing these long johns but I'm wondering how accurate the ~1840 date is and how much earlier that they started to be made and sold

Found this on Wiki :
Another common undergarment of the late-19th century for men, women and children was the union suit. Invented in Utica, New York, and patented in 1868, this was a one-piece front-buttoning garment usually made of knitted material with sleeves extending to the wrists and legs down to the ankles. It had a buttoned flap (known colloquially as the "access hatch", "drop seat" or "fireman's flap") in the back to ease visits to the toilet. The union suit was the precursor of long johns, a two-piece garment consisting of a long-sleeved top and long pants possibly named after American boxer John L. Sullivan who wore a similar garment in the ring.

I've been looking at some re-enactors pages and that seems to be about right.
Our close fitting athletic singlet is a very new way of dressing it seems; 1920's or thereabouts.
My query is a bit of a personal follow-on from the idea of historical walking and what would have been worn in the very early exploration days. I've used the 1950's stuff in anger and have no feelings about doing it all over again but the middle 1800's does appeal to me assuming reasonable weather and no snow
