TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.
There is a fairly long thread on that SD item at Backpackinglight, gear forum. looks to me a lot more practical than a poncho. As an aside, seems peculiar to me that the author mentions the heavy wind yet he is no sand but hasn't thought of making a sand wall around the stove as you do with snow.
If you got to Sierra Designs webpage you can watch a live chat (60 mins or so worth) with Andrew Skurka which is all about keeping dry etc. At the end of that they go through all the design etc of that jacket and the chaps as well as the heavier 3 layer jacket version. Looks like a good bit of gear really.
Good idea. Wouldn't mind a waist drawstring, but that's probably unnecessary complication if a pack is being worn over it.
I also like the ventilation and ease of putting on chaps, but whilst I have a cheap pair made of silnylon, I'm always a little worried about using them in scrub lest they get shredded.
