Our kit.......the journey begins

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

These tend to weigh a bit. If you don't want to retain it for plane/train/back of car travel in future - cut the flap off. Also cut off the thick hand-grip that generally went with them. Every bit of weight saving will be important for kids to actually enjoy carrying the pack. 70L is a large pack for a 7yr old ! I carry about 60 - 65 l for 10 days and I have a few more years on me.

great thing about older-cheaper packs, you aren't as scared of modifying them. trim them back for weight as much as you can, and once the kids start getting some serious vertical change, if they even get close to outgrowing them, get new packs. every kid is different, and I have no idea if yours are destined to get tall, but you for sure don't want them to carry a pack that is too short.

Kitting up for the family can be very expensive with every item paid in multiples. I feel the pain...
