TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Campsite shoes...

Hi guys,
Just curious what people take along when doing a multi day bushwalk for camp shoes...

At the end of the day, when the muddy boots are taken off... what do you put on?

Crocs? Thongs? Something else? What if it's below zero, and you've gotta get out and go pee...
Cheers,
Richard

I would be partial to Sketches "Go walk's". Brilliant shoe. Very light weight. Get 'um wet, dry 'um out easily, no need for socks. And so darn comfortable.

I've got a pair of goose feet gear down booties and the waterproof over shoes to wear around before bed. I haven't used them out on a trip yet but I've been using them around home as my feet have been cold and they are so warm and soft! Very well made gear. I have a down pillow case and balaclava as well to try out once it gets colder!

Croc clogs work but I prefer Keen sandals, especially their lighter weight CNX range. Not much heavier (approx 40g more) but less bulky, also a lot more functional as backup footwear.
Just move it!

I take Keen Whisper sandals as they are fairly light but also function as a decent backup shoe if you get into trouble. Can't walk far in crocs.

Thongs with/without merino socks. Depending if it's hot or cold.

I have some polartec fleece booties with Cordura soles that I bought from australian geographic from memory. Dick smith wore a pair on his long distance ballon flight.

Had them for over 20 years and just magnificent around the camp after a long walk. Not sure that they would still be available though.

When I did the Overland the other week a guy got blisters on the first day and wore Crocs for the rest of the walk I believe. That's fairly far.

cut down fake crocs, to make them less bulky to pack and a little lighter. Not pretty, but they work. I took off a bit at a time to get the balance with still being good to walk in (not for the OLT though!).

If it's wet going to the loo, and i'm too lazy to change into my walking shoes, I put freezer bags over my clean dry socks in the crocs. If I'm going more light weight and don't plan on staying in huts I leave the crocs at home and just use the freezer bags over dry socks inside my walking shoes.

Good old Dunlop KT 26's. Deceptively light. Soft and comfortable. OK to walk in, if need be. And cheap enough to chuck in the bin at the end of the trip if you trash 'em or they're beyond cleaning. Although on the last few walks, I've been wearing a pair of light-weight Columbia sandals over Injinji Toe socks.

+1 on the down booties. I have Feathered Friends booties with the waterproof over boot. The OB has a semi solid foam sole for walking around camp - not so good over very sharp rocks etc but fine for most else. Take the outer off and you have perfect sleeping bag socks for the coldest night.
