TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Replacing shock cord in old aluminium poles

For no particular reason, I dug out my old ?Welsh made Wild Country Quasar (the original bomb proof version from the mid 80s), and noticed that lack of use for 15 yrs has not been gentle on the pole shock cords!

I have replaced many pole shock cords over more recent years, but I don't seem to be able to remove the pole ends from these poles ( a broken wrist doesn't help in terms of grip strength). More modern pole ends come out easily. Does anyone have any idea whether they were glued, or do I just need to use brute force?

I seem to remember these tents used a small disk to hold the shock cord at the first and last joiner

More information please! I don't understand what that means. Are you suggesting that the cord doesn't go all the way to the end of the pole?

I would suggest heating with a flame, then twisting with pliers.

The pole tips are a press fit and are probably oxidised-in over that time so they could take a bit of shifting....they are the same set-up as the older NZ Macpacs and the shock cord is not attached to the actual tip but knotted and then usually also fitted with a small washer and they lock-up against the underside of the 1st pole insert. So you'll need to get the tips off first....some CRC or similar on them and leave it for while then use some soft-jaws in the vice to support the pole and twist them out with a pair of pliers or multi grips. One the tips are off stretch the shock cord tight at the first pole and cut it off then punch-out the cord end thru where the end-tip was with something long and thin that won't break off inside the pole. Certainly a bit of a PITA to re-cord than the current pole setups but I think you'll find that's how those Wild Country Quaasar poles are assembled. Cheers
