TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Cleaning tent groundsheet

Postby creeping_moses » Mon 13 Apr, 2015 9:35 pm

Hi there,

I have a Hilleberg Nallo tent and wish to clean the groundsheet. It has seen plenty of use in muddy campsites and is very dirty.

Also keen to hear advice from those with experience on cleaning (and retreating?) the actual tent fly when it comes to Hillebergs.

Any pro tips on the best way to clean it?

Cheers.

It can't be that difficult. How about a garden hose and a scrubbing brush, maybe a bit of very dilute dishwashing detergent.
I emailed Hilleberg about reproofing my Soulo.
They didn't recommend doing it unless the tent has experienced exceptionally heavy or long term use such as weeks or months pitched in intense sun or wind blown sandy conditions.
My tent is now 4 years old, had over 60 nights use and probably around 20 days pitched all day in full sun. I can't detect any fading or obvious UV deterioration though it probably has degraded to some extent. I was rained heavily upon one night this summer but nothing leaked. Fairly gusty wind also but everything was fine.
Hilleberg did mention a product, I think it was the Nikwax Tent and Gear Solarproof http://www.nikwax.com/en-gb/products/productdetail.php?productid=498. I can't be sure this was actually recommended because after their communication I didn't consider reproofing it was necessary.
My tent fly outer surface seems to pick up and hold fine dust and soil particles. I think it sticks to the silicon coating. Normally I just pitch the tent when I get home and give it a good hose down, let it dry thoroughly for a day then pack it loosely. I sometimes give it a light brushing with a soft dustpan brush.
After all that I have been intending to ask here how to reproof the groudsheet/footprint. One of my last trips the tent was set up on a bed of Prickly Tea-tree leaves, I didn't notice till after I'd pitched it. The leaves were quite sharp, piercing my rubber thongs, clothing and other materials.
I remember reading of a home made silicon and turps mix applied by brush.
I'm just not sure this is compatible with Hilleberg's groundsheet material. Anybody know or recommend a method or product please?

Edit; Nikwax site says not to use detergent cleaners. Maybe best to just use water and a soft brush for cleaning or one of the Nikwax cleaning products.

Find easiest to lay the sheet/fly over a garden table and then hose and scrub as required. Once done, a quick shake and an hour or so laid out under the sun and it's ready for storage.
Just move it!

NikWax TechWash.
My tents get a go every year or eighteen months, depending on use. Dilute it a bit more than the bottle says, and make sure you rinse it repeatedly and thoroughly.

To save your back, use a broom.
