VIC - Request to borrow a 4 season 1P tent. $ payed

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

VIC - Request to borrow a 4 season 1P tent. $ payed

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this request, so if it's not please redirect me but thought I'd give it a shot.

I plan on hiking up Bogong in early May (I posted a topic in the Victoria forum related to this, titled - Early May Bogong Hike advice).

I placed an order for a MLD DuoMid in late March with the intention of using it, but the reality is it may not arrive in time.

If it doesn't arrive, I was wondering if anybody from Victoria (preferably in or close to Melbourne) would be willing to let me borrow a suitable tent for the 3 day period in early May. I haven't locked in any specific dates yet.

I would be willing to pay you $50 for the privilege, plus an additional amount to be returned to me upon the safe return of your tent. Alternatively you could hold on to my Macpac Minaret for the assurance that I will be back.

So basically I'm looking for a 1 person UL 4 season tent, hovering below or around the 1kg mark.

Please let me know if anybody has anything suitable and is interested in this :-)

Thank you!
Rohan

Hey Rohan

I would lend you one if I had one- I'm not real sure that a 4 season, 1p, sub-one kilo tent exists, other than the Big Agnes Chinook- even Backpacking Light is waiting on stock of these.

If I had your tent, (the Minaret)- that's the one I would take- just be judicious with your choice of campsite. Try to aim for little clearings surrounded by trees- no branches to shed snow onto your tent- and natural wind blocks (the trees).

If the weather gets ordinary, you might be glad of that bit of extra space and wiggle room.

Cheers

Id take the Macpac tent too over taking a risk using / damaging someone elses tent.

If you are really keen to use a smaller & lighter then then id suggest calling around the melbourne outdoor shops as i know a number of them hire quality gear.

Travis.

I agree with the "take the Minaret" theme...if It turns out that the weekend's pissing with rain, you'll enjoy the space.

Not sure whether you particularly WANT to walk up the Staircase or not, but do you realise that you an drive a 2WD to Camp Ck Gap and then trot up the Eskdale (most of the year anyway +/- chains)?

Wow, I wasn't even aware a four season sub 1kg tent existed.
When cycle touring short trips I reach for my Microlight by default but for longer trips or trips with the expectation of potential "weather" its the Minaret I grab.
I have been in the Microlight on two stormy occasions but it was as much the fear of the tent breaking as the noise of the howling wind/rain/thunder n lightening that keep sleep fleeting.
I have a lot of confidence in the Minarets "bombproof" reputation and feel its a lot of tent for the money, especially, if like me, you shop during the sales.
It makes for a great 1 man tent for outing with the expectation of being tent bound for a day or so (especially compared to my much lighter Microlight).
Nothing threatens to ruin a trip more than a collapsed tent in dark and rainy conditions (IMHO)

I too would say take the extra weight and the minaret you already own
In my mind 4 season and ultralite don't really go together
Ve are too soon old und too late schmart
