TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Q: First hiking boots

Hi all, first time poster here :-)

I have finally gone ahead and bought myself some proper hiking boots (Scarpa Ranger 2 GTX), which I tried on in store and loved. However as I have been wearing them around the house for a few days I'm starting to worry that perhaps they are not quite right. There seems to be a lot of pressure ontop of my toes that I consider somewhat uncomfortable. It is most noticeable when I am sitting still. In all my reading online I didn't really find any discussions about whether or not there are certain things that just take time for your foot to adjust to if not used to hiking boots. Could this be it? Or do I have a size too small? Or even the wrong boot design for my foot?

Unfortunately I am in the sticks and wont be able to get to the store until the weekend to try on a different size. Just wondering what your thoughts are on these points/your experiences with new boots. Feeling paranoid!

Cheers

Pressure on top of the toes when sitting still (i.e. no downward force) would suggest that they are a bit small. Are you wearing the same socks you initially tried them on with?

Sounds like a sizing issue. The trick is to try on footwear later in the day - preferably a warm day - when your feet have swollen up a bit, and to wear the same socks you would wear while walking.

Does sound like a sizing issue (small). Feel your toes at home = Black toe nails after an arduous walk.
Just move it!

Thanks guys, you've confirmed what I suspected. Luckily I reigned in my impatience and only wore them around the house, so I can still get them exchanged.

Zone-5, that was a great thread, thanks for the reference!
