TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Sleeping Bag Recommendations for Snowy New Zealand in Winter

Hi guys,

I'm trying to find a sleeping bag to suit some cold weather conditions, (New Zealand multi-day tramping in winter), for under $350, and was hoping you'd all have some recommendations on the subject.

I've been trying to do my research online, but it gets really confusing really quickly, and frankly I'm lost. To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm looking for here, I guess something light and warm.

Seems like you have to spend $600+ to get anything decent? I leave on Wednesday morning, and right now I'm thinking of just taking my crappy old Macpac roam 150 bag (rated 2 degrees, beat-up and old) and just wearing extra clothes while sleeping!

But I'm guessing there will be snow, and it'll be worth spending some money to be comfortable. What do you think? Know of any good bags in this price range? :)

You're likely to be very cold in a beat up old synthetic bag that might have lost a lot of its insulating value. It might be a bit late but maybe look at some of the Sea to Summit range, the Trek 2, trek 3 come in your price range, maybe you can pick something up in NZ when you arrive. Have a look here: http://www.bivouac.co.nz/gear/camping-a ... -bags.html

NZ in winter is not the time to compromise on a sleeping bag. If you can't afford to buy a good sub-zero bag, look at renting one.

Have I understood correctly that you have asked this question, and are hoping for a solution, with only two clear days to departure ?

Doesn't bode well for a happy result.

Follow NNW's advice (if MDs link doesn't result in a solution) and you may snatch something from the jaws of something unpleasant.

OR
Take money with you and buy one when you get there.
Look for a rating of at least -12C comfort or lower

Geez you're leaving your run late........you have just missed all the sales.

<$350........that's going to be tough unless you are not worried about weight.
