TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Softshell pants

Has anyone used Patagonia Simple Guide pants? They are light softshell fabric.

I am wondering what people's thoughts are on the temperature range for which they would be appropriate. I am interested in the temperature range for use on their own, and from there I can assess their use with Patagonia Capilene-2 or -3 bottoms and/or Montane Minimus pants

I have previously used a pair of Mountain Hardwear softshell pants but they were thicker (and less stretchy), and therefore warmer. I must admit I found them a bit disappointing when it came to breathability and moisture transfer.

I can't comment on the Patagonia pants, but the combination of medium weight powerstretch [ Cap 3] and microfibre trackies is good to freezing for me, add the additional windshell and I get another 5 degrees
My trackies on their own I would rate as comfortable to about 15C about the same as a pair of chinos.
I guess they softshell would be a bit warmer

i've got these http://www.outdoorresearch.com/en/mens- ... pants.html
300gm as opposed to 430gm of the simple guide.
very breathable. never have sweat problems with them
softshell fabrics can vary massively in weight, seen some over 600gm, choose carefully.

Simple guide pants are good. They're heavier as they're a bit more durable than those OR pants Wayno suggested (which are also a very good pair, and the ones I would suggest getting). I don't own either but have a few heavier weight versions. I recommend getting light colours, as they will get hot as the temps rise, there's not a lot you can do about that.

I would say both are good for freezing and a bit below when moving, given how warm my heavier ones are, but I run hot.

Wondering now if I should look at the ALDI soft-shell in the upcoming ski-gear sale

they are waterproof with a low moisture transfer rate 5000gm/m2/24hr.... with fleece lining, so you were planning on using them in antarctica?
at $40 the build quality has to be doubted, delamination or material degrading or stitching coming apart are likely to be problems.

I think the build quality will be as good as I pay for but as I'll be there buying the fleece hoodie I may as well look
ALDI fleece is very very good value if you are after really light fleece for underwear use
Just something else to think about for chucking in the back of the ute rather than the snowboard pants really

Build quality of the ALDI soft-shell is excellent but too warm for walking or ski touring
