TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

From recollection there was no changing the datum in the Suuntos to anything Aus (GDA94 AGD66 or AGD84). For general use, the default setting is WGS84 is close enough to GDA94, so you can leave it in WGS84.

That is one of the big difference between the Suunto Ambit series and the Garmin Fenix series. I would have thought it could be a relatively simple software update to the Suunto, but none of the Ambit series have this ability. The old Suunto X10 I think had datum support for AGD66 or AGD84.

Yeah there is a setting just called UTM i don't understand what that is
Could I use that or do I need to use utm plus a datum
That's where I'm getting confused
Could I use that for grid work on a topo map

UTM is a co-ordinate system. At a guess, it would be an alternative to Lat/Long. As for which datum it uses, have you read the manual thoroughly? If there's no mention in that, contact Suunto. But given it's a fairly new bit of kit, it would most likely use the latest available datum.

UTM is the projection and GDA94 is a datum. If you cannot change the datum on the Sunnto I would assume it is WGS84. WGS84 differs from GDA94 by a matter of centimetres so you can safely use for map grid references provided your map is GDA94. Older Australian maps are AGD66 and there is some 200m difference. Do a search for the conversion calculation.

My understanding is that you still need to select the datum to match the datum used by your paper map. If there's no option to set it, then it's the default WGS84.
Just move it!

I set MGRS as the datum for my Ambit 3. Based on WGS84 (and hence GDA94).

The direct WGS84 options in the Ambit3 are in hms or decimal degrees.

I might try that MGRS so that works with the Australia topo map grids GDA94

Yeah it only lets you select UTM and no datum so I'll try ask sunnto if it uses WGS84 as a default to its UTM setting I'm tried it out on a few maps and it works but I want to know for sure

No need to ask Suunto. Check out page 68 of the User Guide, under Section 3.28.2

Hey I've checked the user guide all it says is • UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) gives a two-dimensional horizontal position presentation. I'm trying to work out the datum it uses and if I can use that setting with the topo maps grids here in Australia

Yes, sorry - the user guide was not specific. The Ambits all use WGS84 as the datum when using UTM as well, and is not changeable.

You can use it for your topo grids depending on your map. If your map uses GDA94 then WGS84 is close http://www.geoproject.com.au/gda.faq.html#q09 If you use an older map, say with AGD66 datum, then you have to account for the offset

Sunnto answer

Thank you for contacting Suunto Customer Support.

Please accept our apologies for the delayed response.
Please be informed when UTM is used, WGS84 is automatically applied.

Should you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to reply to this email.

Sorry, I didn't realise that was a question. Yes, I have successfully used MGRS on the Suunto with Australian GDA94 maps.
