Berghaus vs Deuter?

Hi all

Am about to purchase a pack and have narrowed it down to the following two:

Berghaus Wilderness 65+15 Gold

and

Deuter Act Lite 65+15

Are these bags much for muchness?

They are pretty much the same weight and size etc.

Don't have a chance to try either of them on.

Flip a coin? Or is one clearly better?

Thanks

Deuter: quality - yes; comfort - ok to awful if over loaded...
Berghaus: A high-quality backpack for long treks but can develop some annoying & loud squeaking noises...

;)

If you can't try before you buy, and are set on either of these two brands, make sure you can return for a refund, NOT a credit, if your choice doesn't fit you.

If buying without trying, a One Planet with the Exact Fit harness in a size chosen in accordance with the OP sizing chart, is more likely to provide a satisfactory fit.

I've used/walked with friends who used Berghauses for decades - no problems with squeaks. Got a new one a few months ago, no squeaks yet. Maybe some models develop them, but not all.

I've tried all sorts of brands, but kept coming back to the comfort of the Berghaus harness.

I have a berghaus pack, same size but might be different model. Love it. No squeaks, very comfy. Try before you buy and if you can bring some weight to chuck in the pack to feel what its like loaded

I had a berghaus pack for 20 years - it finally died and I got a Mont canvas pack. I learnt my lesson and now have a Berghaus pack again.

I have a deuter day pack that gets used on and off the bike, taken to work etc. It is indestructible.

I think either a deuter or berghaus would serve well.

I've had a few Berghaus packs in my limited time on this earth, they're a quality piece of equipment,
comfy & durable...never had any squeaks with mine.

Hmm, not too sure about that. Never heard a Berghaus squeak and I've been around plenty of those. Good packs. As for the Deuter, I have an ACT Lite, 40+10L and love it. Extremely comfortable (yes, even when loaded to its maximum with a bulky SLR, lenses, tripod and the other usual items); mine just walked for twenty days with 12-15kg+ through some pretty decent sized mountains and I would say it's the best pack I've used. The harness and hip belt arrangement is very comfortable, the zips are strong and will not run up onto the fabric, the build quality and fabric is excellent, the water bottle holders on the sides take a Nalgene bottle easily (unlike some others) and it doesn't have too many accessory pockets which tend to annoy me. It's worth noting that the ACT Lite has recently been modified as well. Not a bad climbing pack as well, although the Guide Lite (not available in Australia though is probably better for this). Anyway that's my two cents worth

Oo best part of my berghaus pack (i guess others) is the 'berghaus buckle'. Never would have though such a simple thing would be so good. So tug and tighten your hip belt as much as you want without fear of breaking the buckle. Easy and fast to remove too

Yeah, I've got a few Berghaus packs at home (I may even have the Wilderness that the OP mentioned) and that buckle is a good system; handy when wearing big mitts / gloves

Ahhh the berg buckle..,...because i like it so much i converted my other packs to the 'berg' too. A flick of the wrist and the hip belt is undone.

Thanks all

Due to me being a new member and this post being moderated for like 5 days I ended up buying the berg before it was posted.

Looks like I made a good choice :)

Went walking with it yesterday and no complaints

Cheers

Not many manufacturers make things like they used to. I still have a Berghaus Dart 35.
Still going strong after over 20 years. Old style but functional. Marketing is the be all and end all these days, so manufacturers have to change things because they think that that is what people want, and to sell more.
Wilderness equipment make great packs.
I have a mountain expedition 105lt. Good price, functional and can be rolled down to smaller volumes if required.
Good value for money and no gimmicks.
Amen

I have an old Berhaus Vulkan II. It squeaks a bit. The noises my knees make are still louder.

What's the model of your knee to make so much noise? Refer to the other thread, WD40's silicone spray seemed to have the consensus.

Glucosamine/Chondroitin works better with knees. Haven't yet tried it on squeaky gear. Will get back to you after some experimentation.
