I saw these today at Coles. Could be useful for starting a camp fire.

Seen them too, and grabbed a pack a month or so back. If you don't object to the chemicals and plastic, they're great, very convenient way to carry a firelighter for wet conditions. I keep 2 in an ex-vitamin bottle with a mini bic.

Are these better than cotton balls with vaseline or similar? Worth the purchase and the money (even if cheap)?

Probably not if you're going to try and get a fire with a ferrocium rod, which you could do with the cotton balls. But if matches or a lighter are your tools, then they are quite convenient, not messy, and waterproof.

I bought a pack for a try out and they are pretty good. Not super light but the packaging keeps them dry and intact. I think they are of the same material as the white blocks. You burn them in the packaging and my tip is to stand them on edge - they tend to burn better and more completely.
