Either 3 or 4 layers depending on the temperature.
For those who have been in real cold you will be familiar with the basics of this systems approach
Inner stretch glove 17 grams, wind resistant.
LW fleece glove 55 grams, highly wind resistant
Helly -Hansen pile mittens with added tricot liner, 79 grams highly breathable
US Army Arctic mitten, insulated liner and shell, 155 grams, higly wind resistant

For milder weather to about -20C
Inner stretch glove
Outdoor Research High-Camp 3-finger glove
Again the insulated Arctic Mitten shell
Like a lot of extreme cold weather mittens the US Arctic insulated liners have a double layer on the back of the palm but I may unpick a short line of stitching and add some more insulation on the back

In a few days the H-H pile mittens should also have highly wind resistant but still very breathable shell on them with a deerskin palm

Is it that cold already in Geelong?!!

Im normally fine in the snow in Oz with an "outer" pair of gloves and 2 "inners", drying out the "outers" under my quilt at night. I reckon these would be fine for an extended trip too, on the grounds that most of my current trips are weekends.

Haven't lost any digits yet.

A

Arctic is much [MUCH] colder than Falls Creek and Pretty Valley
About 40 degrees colder, the 4 layers should be good for [I hope] -50C

I just sent those XL High Camp gloves to eBay.
Personally I think they are the most suitable glove for our conditions, others think they are too warm
