Hi All,

I currently have a 2 man tent but am about to do some big multi day hikes in Patagonia & Tasmania so am looking for recommendations for both light & good one man tents and sites to purchase from?

I’d also consider purchasing a second hand one if someone has a good one but turns their equipment over frequently.

You don't save much weight going down to a solo tent. It depends on what you have at the moment tho where weight is concerned. I think you need to tell people what your budget is and how much weight you are prepared to carry to get any real advice

Make sure you’re sitting down when you see the prices for essentially thick Glad Wrap!

Key questions:
A. do you anticipate camping in snow (that is do you need a 4 season tent)?
B. Do you want an integral pitch tent?

Depending on what your price and needs are, Tasi and Patagonia a three season non snow tent would do most situations so around 1.1kg two person weight, basically Big Agnes etc at that weight the walls are thinning to save weight and longer term prone to stretching in the wind but may do for the first 5 years or a stronger tent like MSR etc at around 1.4kg and even stronger things like Hillerbergs at more weight.

Usual criteria:

1. Lower weight
2. Wind stability
3. Gear storage
4. Overhanging vestibule entry for cooking in rain
5. Free standing vs less FS in relation to soft ground vs rocky
6. Ventilation and condensation

I have a selection of tents that may interest you ? I broke my ankle in October on the SCT in Tassie, and my wife said no more !! So All my gear is going at reasonable prices.
Zpacks Duplex ( Spruce Green ) with Flex Pole upgrade - used for 6 nights on the SCT.

My suggestion is not a site to purchase from (because it's in the UK), but it's a good site to help with working out what you want to get.

- Select "Sort by weight Lightest to Heaviest"

They actually weigh each tent, so the weights they quote often differ from the manufacturer's figures. Many of the items have been used by the staff, in which case there are sometimes helpful comments under the "Our Verdict" tab.

You can sort any of their equipment categories by weight, which is fabulous for gram counters. If you're not so bothered, you can sort the lists from Heaviest to Lightest and see the more robust hiking gear.

Hi Jason, I think you probably already have your tent?

If not I think that Macpac make good hiking tents and they have been having a really good sale(up to 50% off). They have 1P tents which weigh around 1.2Kgs and are well made.

If weight is an issue, I think Nemo make very good light tents.

Actually they are great to buy from. VAT (20% in the UK) is removed but I think they add in the 10% GST, and postage costs are far lower than from the US. I have purchased several things from them including many brands like MSR, Thermarest etc. Uk/European stores do not have the restrictive US "home of free enterprise" do not sell out of US thanks to the "socialist" EU.

A lot of Group walkers in Tassie have settled for Macpac Microlights in the past, perhaps even today and i've had my 2kg one since 2000.

In Tassie the waterrproof tub floor is all important however in the quest for lightness they've moved away from (carcinogenic ...?) PVC flooring.

At some stage a lot of forum users appeared to drop everything for Hilleberg, very smart if a little pricier tents. Online shopping now rules.
