Cleaning waterproof pants

Hi,
If I've only warn my waterproof pants a couple of times, but they are quite dirty, can I just wipe them down with water?

Then I wouldn't wipe them down. If they're lightly soiled just maybe dunk in a bucket of tepid plain water. Rubbing might push fine grit into the fabric pores and block them.

It's mud and dirt on the outside as opposed to dirty from my body sweat etc so was a bit unsure!

Use pure soap, it's pretty safe. The stuff sold as Down Soap or by your local supermarket as "pure soap flakes" (dilute them before you start the wash).
Pretty much the same for most outdoor gear, including tents.
I use Velvet Soap. That comes in a standard soap bar

Unless they were worn only a short period of time and remained clean/didn't soak through, ours (Pata. Torrentshell for her, One Planet Overpants for moi) go into the washing machine with tech wash, spray with DWR replenish, air dry then 20 mins in the dryer to reactivate the DWR coating.
