Don't need it but

Bushwalking gear and paraphernalia. Electronic gadget topics (inc. GPS, PLB, chargers) belong in the 'Techno Babble' sub-forum.

TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

I don't need another sleeping bag.
Love that zipper arrangement.
I still don't need another sleeping bag.
Lovely bright red as well.
Still still don't need another sleeping bag.

And when dead, I will be nice and warm tucked into the three sleeping bags and quilt. Four if I count the one being used as a blackout curtain.
I do not need another sleeping bag.
Besides, they only have long. Far too big for me.

n = n + 1 .. just arrived.

Total? umm 7? No I don't 'need' them all but, err 8?, some of them are cheap ones ... very cheap .. but rugged.. not good for light weight. I have 3 light weight ones (light weight for the warmth offered) The others good for car camping, loans ...

Hummm might make one of the older bags into insulated pants ... so n = n-1 :)

My Mum used to say that nothing is cheap if you don't need it. I listened, but perhaps took insufficient heed :)

That bag does look to be rather good value and with nearly 1.5kg of fill, it's gotta be warm. My WM Lynx with overfill has about 1050g and it is stupid warm.

Plus it has the longditudinal chest baffles, which I have always thought are advantageous for a side sleeper such as myself.

The weather here suggests that, locally at least, it has been snowing steadily for nearly two days. I have minimal interest in gaining the altitude necessary to confirm that thought.

The older I get the colder I get, and I am already having mild regrets about selling my WM Meltdown to Pierre. Stuff that I haven't used for years seems to be becoming more relevant to my cold weather needs.

Sounds like the slippery slope to that bag. :D I always like to see the lofted, laid flat thickness to make an assessment as to whether the on paper specs are likely to be realised.

I really do not [ NOT] need any new sleeping gear, a proper duvet parka that fitted would be a totally different thing.
I didn't notice until it was far too late that the XXXL parka I ordered was only an XXL when I finally unpacked it

Where does one find such an animal ? Everything that I see seems to be featherweight and flimsy - obsessed with weight to the severe detriment of utility and durability. (unless one wishes to spend $3000 for a jacket)

They still have three available and I still don't need it. Apparently there has been a big redesign of most of the S2S sleeping bags and a lot of stock is now going to clearance, I still don't need it and if I did buy I'd be homeless because Cecile would kick me out [ although I would be sleeping warm] it really is a good value buy if it suits your needs.
What I will take for the base camp is the older S2S Basecamp synthetic bag and boost the temperature by using a liner inside it.
If I was in the market for a real duvet I think I'd get Ben at Goosefoot gear to make me a custom job, the Mont Icicle is far too short in the body for my taste and needs, if it was 100mm or so longer it would work. Shorter duvets work for HA climbers but not so well for simply stoofing around camp in the snow and my big Arctic stuff is far too haevey to haul for me now

From one gear junkie to another, don't buy it. -29C is not even in the ballpark for Aus.

This is my Alpine sleep setup. Most do double duty before tucking in:
- Puffer pants and jacket
- Down booties with sole
- Merino underwear
- +10C comfort synth quilt (on top)
- 0C comfort down quilt (under)
- EE hoodlum to keep the head warm
- Fleece gloves with index finger tips cut off.
- a meal at night to stoke the bodies internal heating
- Thermarest mat (R rating is essential)
- and a geriatric wee bottle

Even at -10, I'm toast in the morning

It's always fun watching others trying to put on frozen ski boots in the morning. Me, I take my boot liners to bed as well.

The Alpine AP3 looks like a solid pick for winter camping. It might be a bit pricey, but if it keeps you cozy and lasts, it could be worth the splurge.

However you are forgetting the need to deduct 5C from a bags rating for every decade after ~30 years of age, which is why my original winter bag with huge loft is now only good to about -10C; not to mention I have always slept a lot cooler than most and I use the female rating to get a more accurate approximation of my own personal comfort rating So that being -19C and taking away 20 degrees for the age related loss in internal furnace it would be just warm enough for me.
Interestingly the replacement bag is cut a bit larger in girth, there would be no way I could wear a down suit inside the sleeping bag in the link and even the extra 20mm of the new one isn't a lot of extra room and I don't see an expander wedge in the current S2S range

Hey Crollsurf
The night it was -23C at Charlottes pass it was about -18C at our camp in the frost hollow of Pretty Valley just below the big erratic. We were damned cold that night and I was using my Mountain Equipment Redline with a kilo of down in it; although that down was only 650FP and I was wearing my fleece with the parka on top over the bag. Only the Karrimat as a mattress tho.
It can happen

Although, to be fair, -23C is the lowest recorded temp ever for Australia.

Lucky to get much below -5C in spring, which is my preferred BC season.

Yeah, but I never camp in frost hollows if I can avoid it. They get that name for a reason.
I prefer to camp just on the edge of the snow gum belt if I can. Much warmer.

Sometimes you camp where the best sunrises are
EDIT
But here is a quote from something you yourself wrote quite a while ago Roger
"If you can afford it, a mummy bag rated for -20C (however that might be measured) should keep you nicely warm under almost any Australian winter conditions"
And sometimes you are just too damned tired to walk any further or conditions are such that you have to prop where you are and make the best camp you can.

While they've sold out of the big bags there are Travellers on clearance now.
Over the last few years I've got more use from the Travellers we have than any other sleeping bag in my collection. Always an add-in when staying away from home in case the hotel/motels are on the cooler side of comfortable and for taking a quick nap in the car when too tired to drive further safely. I'm tempted to get another one myself and boost it with +200grams of down to make it truly warm
