TIP: The online Bushwalk Inventory System can help bushwalkers with a variety of bushwalk planning tasks, including: Manage which items they take bushwalking so that they do not forget anything they might need, plan meals for their walks, and automatically compile food/fuel shopping lists (lists of consumables) required to make and cook the meals for each walk. It is particularly useful for planning for groups who share food or other items, but is also useful for individual walkers.

Lighter Pack and tent

Postby Puddle Duck » Thu 21 Nov, 2024 1:01 pm

Have been current hiking with my wife and therefore sharing items like tent and cooking gear etc.

However my wife is mostly interested in doing shorter/easier walks of only 2 to 3 nights. ie sections of Great Southwest and Great Ocean Rd walks, the Beeripmo walk is one of our favourites, unfortunately closed at the moment.

I will continue to do and enjoy these walks with my wife however have been contemplating doing some more challenging solo walks ie Cathedral ranges etc as my wife is not good with heights and is not as confident or sure-footed as I am (not that I'm any form of mountain goat.)

I've been looking at saving weight for these solo walks and would probably start with a new pack & tent, however I'm on a tight budget ($3-400) and ask if anybody has any experience or opinion on the following:

Decathlon Trekking Tarp Tent - 2 person - MT900 v2 stated as 1.3kg - going for a 2p as I like the space and at 187cm tall the length is important
https://www.decathlon.com.au/p/trekking ... 03942.html

FYI current tent is a Big Agnus Slide Mountain at about 2.5kg (at 155cm wide & 220 cm long very roomy for a 2 :-)

Naturehike 60L+5L Multifunctional Mountain Bag about 1.2kg https://www.naturehike.au/products/60l- ... rain-cover
Would even consider the 40L+5 if I thought I could fit everything in

Current Pack is an Osprey Aetha 70lt at about 2.5kg which I love but probably don't need the capacity and certainly not the weight.

With the above options I will be saving about 2kg and also reducing the current full Trangia 25-1 (about 1.2kg) to a Trangia mini & a single pot will be another 600 - 700+ grams saving

FYI our current pack weights for say 3 nights is around 16 kg for me (food & cooking gear + sleeping bag, cloths etc) and 14 kg for her tent plus sleeping bag, cloths etc

TIA

No comment on the tent, but I did own the 60l version of that Naturehike pack at one point - and subsequently got rid of it. The main issue was the back length is not adjustable, and it just didn't fit me. For reference, I have a torso length of 53cm, and the Naturehike pack was too short for comfort. The only other comment I would make was it was small for a 60l pack, I could fit substantially more in my 58l Exos than I could in this pack. That's the trouble with buying a pack on-line unfortunately, you won't really know how well it fits until you buy it.

Thanks, that's good to know, I don't know my back length however at 187cm tall I suspect this pack may also be too short for me as well
