After seeing this post, I began reading about how long ground pepper stays fresh for.
- Sealed in a container, there are claims of between 4 months and 2 years
- Freshly ground and stored openly, some people claim it starts to lose its flavour in a couple of days
- The coarser the grind, the longer it stays fresh
Just as an alternative to a pepper grinder or bashing them with rocks, you can pre-grind the pepper, and especially coarsely ground, and you will get much the same result for the duration of a shorter hike.
