Powdered eggs - where to buy?

I was wanting to experiment with the Farm Pride powdered eggs at home before using them on some walks.

I can't seem to find them anywhere on the shelves at Coles, Woolies, Safeway - nada!
There's an online asian food website here in Australia but they're listed as 'Out of Stock'.

Are they still even made?

Bought some 6 months ago from one of the major supermarkets. 150g tin, farm pride. Taste like crap though..

I'm not sure what crap tastes like, so can't compare here.

But I tried abit last year and the rest went in the bin. haven't seen it at my local Coles lately.

they were better for baking cakes than to compile scrambled eggs from.

I haven't seen them Tortoise. We actually 'imported' them.
Maybe amazon? They are just powdered whole eggs but I couldn't find anything tasty locally.

I've often wondered about them - even for good pancakes if not for scrambled egg as such.

Thanks for all the replies. I managed to find some Farm Pride powdered egg at the 3rd Coles I went to - from the sound of the replies here though I'm not looking forward to trying it!

I've just looked at those OvaEasy Egg Crystals from the US on Amazon which sounds great but the checkout won't allow me to post it to Australia. I think there's a strict ban on egg/dairy products coming to Australia which probably has something to do with it. The OvaEasy eggs sounded pretty good from the reviews!

I've whipped off an email to Australian Customs and also an online seller in NZ that sells it (but expensive!) so I'll post the results when i hear from them.

I have not yet heard from Australian Customs - could be a few days me thinks, however the NZ company advised me that a specific importation permit is required to import the OvaEasy egg products into Australia and wouldn't be available until they went online from Australia.

Has anyone here actually been able to (legitimately) bring OvaEasy into Australia?

It was some time ago now but ours came in a big box clearly labelled dried eggs, no drama, tbh I hadn't thought twice abt customs. The rule seem odd, you can import say 10kg of cake mix containing up to 1kg of egg but not 1kg of dried egg on its own ??. Odd

Sounds like the OvaEasy is dehy rather than freeze dry?? Dont think I'd be game to dry some but could be an option?

Last year my wife's aunty posted a small box containing several packets of her favourite biscuits from overseas - processed biscuits from a known and reputable company but biscuits not available in Australia. The biscuits were confiscated from the package (due eggs/dairy) and the option given to have them destroyed or returned to sender. Bit harsh I thought.

I've now tried buying OvaEasy from a few more US based online websites but none of them have the option of sending to Australia.

Pace Farms also produce a powdered egg - shelf life of 6 months and available in 500 gram and 1kg packs, so obviously designed for the food industry but possibly worth considering if the Farm Pride version proves unpalatable.

I had been able to purchase them (Farm Pride I think) a couple of years ago at Coles, but could never find them at Woolies. I can't speak for their more recent availability, as in the interests of getting on the trail earlier in the morning, I have switched to a no-cook breakfast.

I scrambled them with powdered milk, and added plenty of cracked pepper - never had any problems with the taste. I kinda think that scrambled eggs (even fresh) is a bit bland - it all depends on what you add to them.

I've had a positive reply from AQIS and Dept. of Agricuulture here in Australia.

I am able to import OvaEasy Egg Crystals providing:
a. the product is shelf stable and
b. it is commercially manufactured and packaged and
c. it is brought in in <1kg amounts and
d. it is for personal consumption
The product may still be opened/inspected to see if it complies with the above.

I have now found 2 US based companies that (although their website indicates the contrary) they WILL ship to Australia. The US manufacturer/distributor emailed me and said there are 2 Australian companies thinking of importing in the future.
I only wish to purchase several small 4.5oz packets to sample then perhaps more after that.

Managed to buy 3x 4.5 packets of OvaEasy Whole Egg Crystals from the US for AUD$7.72/packet. Each packet = 12eggs.

Good news, (even if again they are odd regulations).. tell us what you think?? Nothing on the real McCoy but a world better than Farm Pride imo . I would like to try that Pace Farm product Matagi (do you have some ) Interesting the short shelf life, OvaEasy looks to be at least a couple of years (from the use by ' date).

I just received the 3 pack of Ova Easy Egg Crystals this morning. I'm going to write up a detailed comparison test and review shortly but just from the 1.5egg Ova Easy sample I've just cooked and eaten both self and +1 thought they tasted awesome and as good if not better than the real thing! Cooked it up as a small omelette with just a little salt and pepper which is the way I normally have my omelette.
You couldn't complain about the taste of this product. Impressed!

I remember my old gran saying that, after being forced to eat powdered egg during WW11, many people actually preferred them by the wars end.

Iv'e since read (somewhere) that the processing alters the proteins/ amino acids to make them easier to absorb.. ie they could be more nutritious than the real thing..

A pinch of tumeric may help the pale look

Yeah but the traditional type of powdered egg was processed by spraying the egg mixture (with additives) into a heated dryer thus 'cooking the egg' to create the powder. When the end user goes to cook the powdered egg it is recooked - a second time - tastes disgusting! This Ova Easy Egg Crystals don't do that, there are NO additives for a start and instead the egg is slowly evaporated to create the powder.
I'll do a taste/comparison test over the next couple of days. Regular Powdered Egg vs. Regular Egg vs. Ova Easy. No I don't work for Ova Easy - just trying to find lightweight palatable alternatives!

I been looking for some of this Farm Pride Egg Powder to try next week.
Coles sell it here, but some might have heard the floods we have had, Our local Coles store got flooded and I found out yesterday it will not open till June of this year. No one else here sells egg powders that I can find. And I not been able to find any stores online selling.

Maybe someone living in the Brisbane area or closer to where I live with a coles store, could purchase a container for me and post out. I'll pay up front to cover the product and the freight. PM me if you can help.

I've had an offer to try out a different brand which is a lot better tasting. I'm still willing to give the Farm Pride brand a try. but from what I've heard it don't taste the best.

you really need to use about 5 x the recommended amount to get something that resembles scarmbled eggs.
unless you want them for baking a cake out in the bush, they are just crap

I've had scrambled eggs in the bush quite a few times this season, made from powdered eggs. It worked really well, indistinguishable from scrambled eggs. I don't know the brand, and I didn't cook them. I made the toast.

Not a very helpful post I guess, but its worth saying that powdered eggs can make quite a reasonable meal.
