Bushwalk Australia

Good old winter is here. How good is it after a days bushwalk and eating a hot meal around the fire. What are people's favorite s. I love stag chilli. Comes in different heats, beautiful. Any other suggestions I should try.

I can honestly say I've never tried canned food while bushwalking. 

I've had tuna sachets before but the clean-up was too messy. 

I do really enjoy the salt-laden tomato soup from a can... maybe I should try taking some next hike...

Stag chilli and Deb with onions. Yum-oh. But who wants to carry heavy tins? My fave camp dinner is freeze-dried Chefsway spaghetti bolognese.

Been known to carry tinned food on overnighters in the past however instead of "tinned" I will carry home made stew,curry,chilli etc ,frozen in summer not in winter ,feed for two will fit into a freezer bag then a 500ml screw top plastic food container I do however favor the Edgells Tassi made brand of instant spud as it is an add water only mix (they do make an Onion one) as I have personally found Deb a wee bit gluggy.

Always have homebrand Baked Beans in the car, for some reason they taste better in the bush served with bacon, otherwise the only tins are sardines and tuna in oil and Spam Tinned meats etc are good as they can be eaten cold in an emergency or on total fireban days

Spam with real Bacon I hope MD pity they only do that one in the 340g size ,have you tried Heinz Beans and Bacon ?beats homebrand hands down

I'd assumed he meant for car based camping. Try these http://www.franckfood.com/ I particularly liked the beef stew and the sausages in lentils. Free posting, I think for over $100 worth, and long shelf life.

With baked beans? Plumrose cocktail franks, bacon and onions.

Corned Beef and Baked Beans were high on my walking menu 50 odd years ago

Still is on mine, deb with onion and surprise peas and a tin of bully-beef will feed 3 or 4 people Or 1 hungry person with left-overs to mix with an egg and fry up for breakfast

There was no space. I realize its a computer program thing. Just stirring things up. All good. I just thought it was a stupid(if im allowed to say that ) . Poor old little dogs in tins. And thanks for the link to scunthorpe as I had no idea what that word ment. Ironically theres a very rude word in scunthorpe.

Haha! On topic I dont mind canned food for an overnighter. Stag chilli is great, or any think soup of your choice with some lightly toasted bread always goes down well.

How about a spud in foil in the fire with some butter. Yum

Um well I have to do it.

Only about 10 kgs a slab!

I guess beer is in a tin. Marty you could take out your tent and mat and a few other things to fit the slab in. After a slab its not going to matter where u sleep.

Great idea the bacon chips

Potato in foil with double butter is even better, with beer [ actually a mixture of stout and green ginger wine called dragons blood ] with real bacon and fresh bread. I'm taking the old cast iron dutch oven to my winter camp just so I can have fresh bread

Heinz Big Eat Chilli Beef is better. Its a larger tin and it always seems to be on special with "two for $4" deals at Coles.

But whats even better is just taking a pork roast and cooking it on camp fire with aluminium foil. Wrapped with newspaper in the temperatures of this time of year, they keep fine probably for 2 days but I only enjoy it on the first night. I've been getting these "Thai Mini Pork Roast" things at Coles. They're great for angering campers nearby if they're vegetarian, minimal impact types who are against fires, or just jealous. Instant mash potato and some gravy makes it even better, even if instant mash tastes completely horrible.

What's wrong with cooking in a Dutch oven? As a professional cook I am interested to know
