Also note the new 1:50,000 scale printed maps (and the first one is Lake St Clair). I suspect these will become the norm and 1:25,000 will be phased out.

Also as the maps are available as KMZ, which is just a zipped KML, you can probably load them to newer Garmin GPS's as well.

One of the best things about Tassie is that you can get the whole island in 1:25000 maps with 10m contour intervals. The intricacy of our landscape mean that too much detail will be lost in a move to 1:50000

Start buying up old maps then...

Now if they went one step further and made the full system digital you should be able to select an area on a map and get it printed on demand at the scale you want. That would get you over the hurdle of trips in the corners of maps.

You can sort of do this with LISTmap, but only for small sections at a time, using the 'Tools' item on the map to download a PDF. The print quality is terrible, due to being designed for screen not for print. All faded-looking washed out colours. Actually, you can get it done in better colours if you use their "Scanned Maps" base layer instead of their "Topographic" layer. The only limitation is that you can only print small portions at a time. But this is still VERY good indeed. Very useful! If you want more then pony up and pay the measely $2 per map. Join them together if you're worried about edges.

I've found that I can overlay their OpenData-sourced contours onto LISTmap for a better result with their standard "Topographic" base layer (since they don't start displaying contours until zoomed way in). Now I have my 50m contours when zoomed in a bit and 10m when zoomed in a bit more. Works very nicely.

In any case, they are finally making some steps towards delivering on their (very old) promises. What we've got now is vastly better than what we had only a few years ago (in terms of digital mapping).

I'm speechless. I thought this long promised day would never come!

Dont celebrate too early - I have found most Garmin custom maps to be a bit average but it is good that they have finally been released. Try some out and let us know how you go

Tassie contours @ 5m for Garmin...

I have the free DVD of 'Australia Contours 5m' that is divided up into small regions.
If anyone wants a region or three of Tassie contours at 5m... just let me know and I will upload them for you as an img file for Etrex and Nuvi...

If it's popular I'll start a separate thread for the request & uploads.

I used one of these setups in the USA maybe 10 years ago. I thought it was pretty exciting at the time. Worked well but you could only get some weird US paper size somewhere between A4 and A3 but squarish, and there was a lot of mucking around to get the map at a useful scale that would match a scale rule.

Old thread, but I have just been working with someone who purchased some of the digital tasmaps thinking the KMZ's could be used on a Garmin GPS but they DONT WORK ON GARMIN GPS'S!

It seems the TASMAP KMZ uses tif images which are not supported by GARMIN from what I can see. They work perfectly on GoogleEarth but not on Garmin devices. I proved this by editing the image to jpg and hand modifying the files.

I will send the info to TASMAP and hopefully they will either fix the issue or put up some disclaimer. I suspect Garmin wont change as they would probably prefer that you purchased their products.

If anyone HAS got them to work (as downloaded) then I would love to hear from you.

Your timing is impeccable tastrax. This might explain why I could'nt get it to work last time I tried.

Other option might be Open Street Maps?

I have gone the open street map route - great open project and you can fix errors that you find and they will get updated whenever Andrew updates his files

The workflow I have used is as follows

Unzip KMZ file
Use script in PaintshopPro to convert all 35 images in folder to jpg
Use textpad to replace .tif with .jpg in kml file - save
Open kml in Google Earth and save as KMZ
Repeat for every map!

I have just been advised that the 50K and the 25K series have all been updated to jpg files so new tasmap digital purchases for those maps should work on Garmin devices.

Hopefully they will also do some of the Park maps as well

For those having difficulty getting the Tasmap files into their Garmin device, this method has worked for me, many other suggestions did not. This guide is based on a PC, but i don't see why it wouldn't work just as well on a mac.

1: Download the file from TasMap in geotiff format.
2: download and install MapTiler software - https://www.maptiler.com/ It's Free!
3:Select Google Earth / Garmin format in MapTiler. Click Continue.


4: load the geotiff file into maptiler - it will have a name like "g4435.tif" The software will automatically pick up the coordinate system and geographic location of the image.
Click Continue.


5:Select Garmin GPS devices on the next screen. Click Render - You must select an EMPTY folder on your computer.


Once the rendering process is complete, you can go ahead and quit maptiler.

6: Open the folder where maptiler saved the rendered data. Select BOTH the directory and doc.kml files, and add them to a Zip file via the right click menu


7: rename the extension of the created .zip file to .kmz.


8: you can now copy the .kmz file to the Garmin -> Custom Maps folder on garmin device, and it should actually work!

Nicely done JimBob, should be really handy for a lot of people.

It is also worth noting that using this method, one can install the 1:25000 map and the 1:50000 map. The garmin will automatically display the map most appropriate depending on how far you zoom in.

Just off topic a bit.....can Maptiler be used to make maps that are easy to use with iPhone etc?

Don't see why not? but each app likely has a unique format that it recognizes, so you'll want to work that out in advance.
