Help please. I'm trying to load some maps and stuff on my phone but I can't get anything for NSW with contours so as to be able to use it like a GPS? Can this be done? Also I have a compass function but it gives your position in degrees. Do you know if it is possible to get an app that will give your position in UTM co-ordinates like a GPS will?

Just a warning, I am a Luddite when it comes to technology so be gentle with me. :?

There are a few different options here and have been discussed at length in another thread.

Compasses give bearings not positions, so degrees are typically what you want here.

This isn't a navigation app, but I've been enjoying using Walkmeter lately. It tracks distance, speed, elevation, etc which has been helpful for me as I get back into bushwalking after a long break. For instance it's helping me get to know my own pace, see how often I take breaks, and keep track of how far I walk each month. Another thing I like about it is that it doesn't make you sign up for any online services, nor does it ask intrusive personal questions, before you can use it -- and I looked at a heap of walk tracking apps before I found one that didn't do any of that obnoxious stuff.

Here are some screenshots:

I was pleased to hit 100km last week (about 5-6 weeks after i started walking again)

Anyway just thought I'd mention this app as it's been good fun to use these last few weeks! No association with the makers, just a happy customer (or will be when I pay them the $2.49 for the premium/ad-free version, which I'll go and do now :))

I like HandyGPS as a free app that will give your position as a grid reference (you will need to select the appropriate map datum) for use with paper maps.

If you can spring for the cost Memory Map is great. I recently did Kanagra to Karoomba and used it, it was so easy and detailed that it felt like cheating. Support from the company is great as well.
