An interesting article, (including pictures) New Scientist (Edn: 2729) discusses the use of memory chips to replace CMOS sensors. The promise is gigapixel cameras in ultra small format and even mobile phones with huge pixel density.

Perhaps one step closer to that fast, cheap, ultra compact, D-SLR image quality, superzoom, waterproof, shockproof, full manual and automatic operation, massive to minute aperture, lightweight camera with cinema quality full HD video recording capabilities and built in GPS, smartphone and PLB?
