Has anyone had any experience bringing in empty fuel canisters (in this case methylated spirits for a trangia) and stoves into Tasmania by air, ideally on Jetstar? The outdoor shop we hired from thought they would be fine to carry in checked baggage if they were thoroughly aired and dried,
while Qantas have a much more demanding procedure that also applies to Jetstar. We'll fill out the form for the way over but it will be difficult to air out the stove to their standards after the end of the walk before getting on the plane. Has anyone had to do this and have any advice? Thank you

I have been in contact with the airlines and the advice was as follows for all fuel bottles:
1. Empty out all fuel
2. Leave open (I put a loose cloth on top and leave then for several days in the garage so all the fuel smell goes.
3. then put the lid back on and pack in checked in baggage only.
I use Shellite but the instructions are the same for all fuel bottles.
I do not declare anything as you are only carrying a fuel bottle with no fuel in it or vapours.
Never had any issue - you will know when your fuel bottles are ready to go as when they are open there is no major smell of fuel.
On the return journey the same can be a bit of an issue as you may not have time to leave them open for too long. I normally stay at least 1 night in Tassie at the end of the trip so I manage to do the same as above and leave the fuel bottle open in the hotel room once I have reclaimed the unused fuel and returned it to the shop!

alcohol is easy, just rinse with water and your safe. Shellite and kero need more help, but can be made safe with a bit more work.

Metho stinks bad, not so easy to get rid of the smell if you have a short time frame to prepare,
I rinse and wash with soapy water numerous times, than add some olive oil and shake the bottle, than wash and rinse again and again and again and let air dry. Smell is gone in no time, I than wrap the empty bottle in paper towels and place in a zippy bag sealed.

I'm surprised, I would have thought that since metho will dissolve in water, that it would be enough. I've heard of using mineral oil for cleaning kero and shellite. The important part is that it works.
