Fly Fishing on the Overland Track?

Fri 14 Feb, 2014 3:07 pm

Hi all,

Doing the Overland Track over 7-8 days at the end of the year and was hoping to take along the fly rod. Just putting it out there to see if anyone has any personal experience with fly fishing on the track or side trips - I guess the biggest question, is it worth carrying my ff gear?

I have read up on this and found some useful info but would love some more if possible..

Thanks all in advance..
Brad

Fish in the Mersey & Narcissus catchments, these you are probably aware of Brad? Not aware of anything else (within scope of 7/8 day OLT). Rumours abot Lk. Ayr, no expert but have doubts, never tried nor seen anything come from there.

The easiest way to work out if it's worth it is to get Greg French's book, Trout waters of Tasmania, as it lists all the waters containing trout in Tassie. Some people do take their flyfishing gear on the Overland Track, and there are certainly some spots you may catch one, albeit mostly small. The Southern end of the park is better - including Lake St Clair.

I chatted with a guy carrying a fly rod on the OT last month. He seemed to be catching fish, based on his stories at least. He said he was just doing catch and release.

I know it can rain a lot there, but I doubt the water on the track would ever get deep enough for fish.
