Study the pricing of the timetable carefully. Popular tourist destinations are markedly expensive. (I don't know if this has changed). But if you "stage" your trip, it used to be possible to save quite some dollars e.g by stopping at Gowrie Park en route :-cheap accom.,great restaurant and the Roland circuit.
Also, getting off at Leary's Corner and walking the last 4 km's helped as well, but of course you may get the hairy eyeball with the ticket.

Both bus services give 20% discount to YHA members, which is considerable. Make sure you have your card! Great for you next Europe trip and life membership is a good option.

EDIT: $40 full fare for a 1hr 45min isn't bad really. It'll cost you $28 if you stage it via Gowrie Park. Accom. there used to be cheapest in Tassie at $13 for a room of your own. But it looks like singles are now up to $25 per night, so a disincentive to stop on the way. Leary's is no longer an option.
