Off season stove question

Postby Moondog55 » Tue 10 Dec, 2024 9:04 am

I've never done the OLT
I'd like to do it soon before I get too unfit.
Also I'd prefer to do it in the cooler times so around June or July.
Shellite or canister gas?
It would be crossing over on the ferry so either works for me

Bit off-topic, but...

No guarantee, but the weather is usually nicer in August. More snow on the ground (although it's always unreliable if there will be any in Tassie), and more sun in the sky (although it's always unreliable if there will be any in Tassie).

Yeah but August is my skiing time usually; and while I still can.

I always use gas.
Whatever's more efficient for you. You won't need to melt snow for drinking water, so you don't need that much fuel. Gas is generally neater (and less smelly) if using the huts.

I'm notorious for stopping for a brew in the middle of the day tho.
If canister gas I thought a couple of canisters [ 240g] would be plenty in summer but winter I might need one emergency [ 100g]extra; 3/4 litres of boiling water a day. If I bought some FD meals I would use a lot less gas but they all taste like crap.

My choice is always shellite with a tailored volume of fuel per trip.

I usually budget 50mls / person/day for regular and 100mls/ person / day for snow use with expectation of melting snow. I back off the 100mls / person if I am sure of accessing water in lieu of melting snow.
