HI all, just wonder what the recommendation is for an overnight walk with regards to waterproof pants? There's a bit of snow about, but we are planning to time it so that it's not actually snowing when we do the walk in the next couple of weeks.

What are your thoughts?

I always take and wear waterproof pants but I mostly hike in winter. I just got tired of quick dry pants that didn't dry quick. Basically I wear my base layer and waterproof pants and shell jacket and this is enough for me in winter. Doing it this way means I don't have to stop, take off my pack, find my shell and waterproof pants, put them on, do up my pack, put it back on all in the rain. I also always have my rain cover on my pack all the time.

I reckon if your hiking in Tas, you've got to expect the unexpected rain/sleet/snow. Even if the forecast says its going to be sunny

Unless walking in cold wet pants doesnt bother you, i'd be wearing overpants.

thanks guys, i feared as much. I haven't any goretex pants at present (only PVC which won't be much good). I'll order some paclite when they're on special but for this upcoming walk I'll have to go the "not so quick" dry pants and hope that the gaiters keep most of the snow out.

i have a cheapo pair of light weight waterproof pants that i have "sawn off" just below the knees - below that i leave for the gaiters S2S quagmire canvas atm..... this could be a cheap stopgap - the material doesn't breath but they are shorter and get a breeze that way...

One thing you might find with such pants is a problem with keeping them from slipping down, at least enough to be a pest. In which case some braces may do the trick- perhaps almost but not quite as pesky to deal with. Our local Allgoods type shop, Trims sell them for $20.
Mont make a pretty reasonably priced set of rain pants when so much is so dear.

A rain skirt/kilt is lighter, cheaper, more breathable and quick and easy to take on and off (no need to take off boots and gaiters). With length down to your gaiters there is plenty of cover.

But you will get lots of strange looks on the track!

Good idea... but who sells the WaterProof Breathable sporrans?! :lol:
