Does anyone know what the heating situation is at Scott Kilvert and whether I should carry in some head beads next weekend?

Cheers

There was plenty of coal there 4 weeks ago but that's all I can offer.

To be on the safe side I would carry heat beads because in the past we have arrived there to no coal /briquettes and you will need to do a big search for suitable firewood.

Thanks Phil, fingers crossed there's a bit left! I have tried the parks & wildlife, so hopefully can get an indication from them too.

How much would you carry Corvus?

Yes we are serious not all Huts have been converted to gas and the coal is being replaced by briquettes which means less ash :)

Wow. I'm even kind of amazed that they are 'converted to gas'. In NSW we consider em lucky to be 'converted to standing' !

Heard from Parks and Wildlife today and independently that there's plenty of coal at Scott Kilvert for those intending to walk in the near future.

Good news indeed. Will be up there with some friends mid July, suspect the heating will be very welcome.

We climbed Frenchman's Cap last July and just after the Franklin bridge there was a plastic bin with 1kg bags of briquettes. I suggested we take one bag each, but the other guys in the party were not keen on carrying in any additional weight, though they were happy to let me take one...

This led to some funny scenes later at Lake Vera hut as we scrounged through the coal bins like Dickensian urchins looking for useable coal fragments to supplement the few nuggets i carried in :)

4 days later as we were walking out, we spotted a chopper heading that way with a load slung underneath
